Appearance
Alain is a tall, lean aasimar with warm bronze skin, silver-white hair, and luminous amber eyes. A faint golden radiance gathers around his irises when he invokes divine power. He wears carefully maintained chain mail beneath a blue-gray tabard marked with a stylized sunburst, carries a polished shield, and keeps a longsword at his hip. His posture is disciplined and alert, shaped by years of military training, though his expression is gentler than his stern bearing suggests.
Mannerisms
Alain checks the straps of his shield whenever he enters an unfamiliar place, stands at attention when receiving serious news, and addresses frightened civilians in the calm tone of an officer giving clear battlefield instructions.
Personality
Alain is patient, observant, and unfailingly courteous, especially toward people who expect to be ignored. He speaks like a soldier even in ordinary conversation, giving concise answers and asking practical questions. Beneath his restraint is a fierce compassion that becomes unmistakable whenever someone is threatened.
Ideals
Mercy is not weakness. The strong exist to shelter those who have been denied the strength to protect themselves, and no command is sacred when it demands cruelty.
Bonds
The refugees of the Ashwater Crossing are Alain's family in all but blood. He carries a small iron token from their wagon train and will risk his life to defend their descendants or any community threatened by the same forces that destroyed their homes.
Flaws
Alain cannot easily forgive cowardice in himself or others. He is too willing to obey the burden of duty, even when rest, retreat, or asking for help would be wiser. He also fears that his celestial gifts make him a symbol rather than a person, so he hides pain behind military discipline and sometimes treats emotional vulnerability as a failure.
Quirks
Background
Alain was born beneath an unnatural dawn, when a column of golden light broke through the clouds above his family's rural home. His parents raised him with humility, but the village never quite stopped treating him as an omen. Seeking a place where deeds mattered more than appearances, Alain joined the border guard as soon as he was old enough. He proved an excellent scout and an unshakable shield-bearer, relying on speed, patience, and a quiet command of the battlefield rather than brute strength. His company was eventually ordered to defend a refugee column from raiders who had already burned several settlements. Alain watched his commander choose a tactically sound retreat that would have abandoned hundreds of civilians. Refusing the order, Alain rallied the remaining soldiers and held the crossing until the refugees escaped. The victory came at a terrible cost, and the survivors remembered him as both a deserter and a savior. In the aftermath, a radiant presence answered his desperate prayer, revealing a path of sacred duty. Alain became a paladin of the Oath of Devotion, determined to protect the helpless even when law, rank, or convenient orders stand in the way.
