Appearance
Luctus is a lean, sharp-featured half-elf with olive skin weathered by cold streets, damp rooftops, and long nights outdoors. His dark brown hair is kept just past his ears, usually tucked beneath a battered charcoal hood. One side of his coat has been carefully re-stitched with dark green thread, while the other bears rough repairs from years of hard use. His amber-brown eyes are constantly moving, measuring exits, hands, and hidden intent. He keeps a polished silver signet ring on a cord beneath his shirt, the one possession he cleans every morning. His movements are quiet and economical, and his expression usually suggests he has noticed something everyone else missed.
Mannerisms
Luctus pauses before answering simple questions, as if checking the speaker's wording for traps. He casually positions himself where he can see doors and windows, and he rolls his silver signet ring between his fingers whenever someone mentions justice, family, or loyalty.
Personality
Witty and guarded, Luctus treats conversation like a card game. He notices small inconsistencies, remembers exactly who said what, and rarely gives a complete answer when a partial one will do. He is loyal to a very small circle and fiercely protective of anyone who earns a place within it. Beneath his dry humor is a relentless need to find purpose in the wreckage of his past, with vengeance often disguising itself as principle.
Ideals
Truth. A comfortable lie is still a weapon, and powerful people use it to control everyone beneath them. I will uncover what is hidden, even when the truth makes everything worse.
Bonds
He carries the stolen signet ring of the merchant lord who engineered the betrayal that killed his chosen family. He will not rest until the lord's entire network is exposed and dismantled.
Flaws
He assumes every kindness conceals a debt, every authority figure is lying, and every delay gives his enemies time to escape. Once he decides someone is responsible for a wrong, evidence can struggle to change his mind.
Quirks
Background
Luctus Vulliscor was raised between two worlds and fully claimed by neither. His human mother worked as a ledger clerk for a prosperous merchant house, while his elven father disappeared before Luctus was old enough to remember his voice. From his mother, Luctus learned numbers, contracts, and the dangerous difference between what was written and what was true. From the streets, he learned that truth was often something powerful people buried beneath money, threats, and polite smiles. His half-elven heritage made him useful as a courier and eavesdropper, someone who could move through respectable rooms without quite belonging to them. His criminal career began with smuggling letters and ended with the murder of the only people he considered family. A merchant lord used Luctus's network to arrange a betrayal, then blamed the resulting bloodshed on a low-ranking gang that included his closest friend. Luctus discovered the deception too late to prevent the executions, but not too late to steal the evidence. He now travels under his own name, using wit, stealth, and carefully chosen alliances to uncover the people who ordered the killings. He does not seek justice in the clean, official sense. He seeks the truth, then decides what it deserves.
