Appearance
A compact rock gnome with warm copper-brown skin, a broad expressive face, and thick dark hair braided with tiny brass bells. His most distinctive feature is his hands, which are callused across the fingertips and palms from years of lute strings, drum rims, trap mechanisms, and hand stitching. His voice is soft and resonant, but before he speaks he takes a deliberate breath through his nose and lightly taps two fingers against his thumb, as if finding the opening beat of a song. He dresses in a wine-red entertainer's coat over a cream shirt, practical leather armor, polished boots, and a bright sash bearing scraps of old performance ribbons.
Mannerisms
Before speaking, he draws a quiet breath through his nose, pauses for half a heartbeat, and taps thumb against finger as though counting in a band. When thinking, he hums unfinished melodies under his breath. He addresses unfamiliar animals as if they are fellow performers and gives every repaired object a name.
Personality
Warm, observant, and quick with a joke, Mairu treats conversation like a duet. He notices who has been left out of a room and instinctively draws them in. Beneath his easy charm is a careful listener who remembers small details, especially promises, favorite songs, and the names of people's relatives.
Ideals
Joy is a form of courage. Laughter, music, and a well-told story can return hope to people who have forgotten they possess it.
Bonds
He carries his mother's first wind-up bird, now repaired many times, and will risk himself to protect performers, artisans, and displaced families.
Flaws
He cannot resist turning a tense moment into a performance, even when silence or secrecy would be wiser. He also takes criticism of performers and craftspeople personally, and will defend a stranger's dignity long after the practical danger has passed.
Quirks
Background
Mairu Oloyara was raised among the clockwrights and puppet makers of a bustling rock gnome burrow, where every celebration needed music and every machine needed a clever hand. His mother built wind-up birds for traveling shows, while his father tuned string instruments and repaired stage mechanisms. Mairu learned both crafts, but he discovered that a melody could make strangers share a table faster than any invitation. By adolescence, he was performing with a hand drum, a battered lute, and a troupe of acrobats who traveled from village fairs to wealthy city theaters. His career changed when a performance hall collapsed during a storm. Mairu used a half-remembered illusion and a cutting verse to keep a panicked crowd moving toward the exits, saving dozens of lives while his troupe scattered into the rain. Since then, he has traveled as a wandering storyteller, repairing broken instruments and exposing cruel officials through songs that sound harmless until the final verse. He joined adventurers because danger has a way of revealing who people truly are, and because every frightened person deserves someone willing to make them laugh long enough to find courage.
