Appearance
A slender tiefling with muted rust-red skin, short swept-back black hair, small swept horns, and a narrow tail with a blunt, expressive tip. Their amber eyes are bright and perpetually curious. Their hands are unusually noticeable, broad-palmed and ink-stained, with calluses from years of copying manuscripts, grinding pigments, and helping their halfling family with farm work. They stand very close when speaking, often leaning forward with complete, unguarded attention, seemingly unaware that their height and horns make them loom over smaller folk.
Mannerisms
Nahal listens with their whole body, leaning forward until their horns are almost within arm's reach. They answer questions immediately, often before considering whether the question was sincere, and they pronounce difficult scholarly names with the confidence of someone who has never imagined being wrong.
Personality
Nahal is open-hearted, earnest, and intensely curious. They assume that everyone is telling the truth because they have not yet discovered a convincing reason to assume otherwise. They ask intimate questions with scholarly seriousness, offer help before it is requested, and treat villains, nobles, ghosts, and talking animals as potential friends until proven otherwise. Their optimism is not performative. It is the foundation of their understanding of the world.
Ideals
Truth should be shared, not hoarded. If knowledge can prevent suffering, keeping it secret is a form of harm.
Bonds
The Berriz family is my whole world. I will protect their farm, their good name, and the belief that every stranger deserves a fair chance. I also carry the cracked clay cup that first awakened my magic.
Flaws
I believe people when they speak with confidence, even when their story is obviously self-serving. I also mistake caution for cynicism and can become quietly hurt when someone refuses to explain themselves.
Quirks
Background
Nahal Berriz was found as an infant in a reed basket beside the irrigation channel behind the Berriz family farm. The Berrizes were halflings, practical and affectionate, and they raised Nahal without treating their horns, tail, or red skin as anything stranger than another family resemblance. Nahal grew up believing that every person had a good reason for what they did. When neighbors warned them about wicked people, Nahal assumed they meant people who had simply not yet been understood properly. Their unusual talent first appeared while helping their mother repair a cracked household charm. The words came out in a language Nahal did not know, and the broken clay cup mended itself in a flare of golden fire. Their family sent them to a nearby archive to learn whether the magic came from some forgotten ancestor. There, Nahal became a diligent sage, copying records, asking relentless questions, and trusting every confident answer they received. They eventually learned that tieflings are often associated with fiends, but they have not yet grasped that heritage does not automatically make someone cruel, nor that kindness alone does not make everyone trustworthy. Nahal now travels to discover the truth of their ancestry, certain that whoever left them behind must have had a loving explanation.
