Appearance
Dresden is a lean, weather-beaten human man with close-cropped dark brown hair, a crooked nose, and pale gray eyes that seem permanently alert. His body bears old training scars and a long, faded burn mark across his left forearm. He wears battered military leathers over a plain shirt, carries a massive greataxe that looks almost too large for his wiry frame, and keeps a red unit sash tied around his wrist.
Mannerisms
Dresden constantly checks exits, counts nearby weapons, and taps two fingers against his wrist as if listening for a marching cadence. Before a fight, he quietly recites the names of dead soldiers. He rarely sits with his back to a wall.
Personality
Dresden is blunt, restless, and suspicious of polished manners. He has a dry sense of humor and respects people who admit fear more than those who pretend to be fearless. He is unexpectedly gentle with animals, recruits, and anyone carrying old injuries. Once he decides someone is under his protection, he becomes fiercely loyal, even when doing so is inconvenient or dangerous.
Ideals
Freedom. No one should be treated as a tool, a number, or a sacrifice for someone else's ambition.
Bonds
The faded unit standard of the Ashen Watch is the last surviving symbol of Dresden's former company. He will risk nearly anything to protect veterans, deserters, and ordinary soldiers abandoned by their commanders.
Flaws
Dresden distrusts authority so deeply that he will sabotage a sound plan if it comes from someone wearing a uniform. When frightened or ashamed, he becomes reckless and picks fights he cannot afford to lose.
Quirks
Background
Dresden was born in a frontier garrison town where every child learned the sound of an alarm bell before learning their letters. He enlisted young, not from patriotism, but because the army offered food, purpose, and a place where no one asked why he preferred sleeping beside a weapon. His small frame and unimpressive strength made him a poor fit for conventional infantry, yet he survived through stubbornness, ferocity, and a talent for turning fear into motion. During a disastrous retreat, his unit was abandoned by its officers. Dresden broke ranks, dragged wounded soldiers through a burning supply yard, and returned alone to retrieve the unit standard. The survivors called him brave. Dresden considers the event a failure, because he could not save everyone. He left the army after discovering that the officer who ordered the retreat had been rewarded for preserving valuable supplies. Now he travels as a sellsword and wanderer, carrying the old unit standard folded inside his pack and seeking causes that feel more honest than orders shouted from a safe distance. He has learned to fight with explosive, reckless aggression, embracing the fury that rises whenever he sees someone treated as expendable. He does not dream of becoming a hero. He simply refuses to abandon people who have been placed under his protection.
