Appearance
A quick-eyed lightfoot halfling with sun-browned skin, a narrow scar crossing one eyebrow, and a mop of dark curls kept under a hood. He favors practical dark leather, soft-soled boots, and a rapier worn more like a tool than a trophy. His hands are ink-stained from forged notes and lockpicks, and he always seems to be one step from slipping into shadow.
Mannerisms
He speaks softly, but taps two fingers against any locked surface he studies. When planning a heist or battle, he tilts his head as if listening to a private rhythm. He smiles at danger the way other people smile at old friends.
Personality
Cheerful under pressure, suspicious of authority, and almost pathologically prepared, Merrin treats every problem like a puzzle box with a joke hidden inside. He is generous with food, secrets, and clever solutions, but stingy with his deepest feelings. He prefers to win by making the other side underestimate him until the last possible second.
Ideals
Freedom. No throne, guild, or iron law has the right to decide who gets to breathe easy. The small should always have a way out, and he intends to keep carving one.
Bonds
He still sends coin to the widowed soup-kitchen keeper who fed him as a child, and he will risk almost anything to protect her family.
Flaws
Merrin cannot resist a challenge involving a locked door, a sealed letter, or a self-important guard. He sometimes lies first and explains later, even when the truth would have done less damage. When cornered emotionally, he turns jokes into shields and may vanish from a conversation rather than admit fear or grief.
Quirks
Background
Merrin Bramblewick was born in a burrow-town where honest work paid in hunger and the local magistrate taxed every loaf twice. Like many lightfoot halflings, he learned early how to be overlooked, and he turned that gift into a trade. By fifteen, he could slip through crowded markets, lift a key ring without a sound, and vanish before the owner noticed the weight missing from a belt. He was never the cruel kind of thief. Merrin stole from the smug, the brutal, and the comfortably careless, then spent a portion of the haul on soup, medicine, and bribes that kept poorer families out of the cells. His talents eventually drew him into the service of a fence who taught him more than lockpicking. She taught him patience, disguise, and how to read a room faster than a ledger. When a shipment of evidence vanished from a corrupt sheriff's strongbox, Merrin took the blame to protect a friend, then escaped jail by crawling through a drainage culvert no larger than a wine cask. Since then he has worked as a traveling troubleshooter, selling his blade and wit to people who need doors opened, names uncovered, or tyrants embarrassed. He tells himself he is done with crime, but the truth is simpler, he still believes the world belongs a little less to the powerful when he has been in it.
