Appearance
Brawly is a broad-shouldered, powerfully built dwarf with weathered bronze skin, a completely bald head, and a thick black beard braided with iron rings. His eyes are deep brown with a faint reddish glimmer inherited from his duergar blood. He wears finely fitted mithral plate armor etched with the heraldic symbols of the king he once guarded, along with a polished mithral shield. His massive dwarven battleaxe is scarred from years of service, though its edge remains unnaturally keen.
Mannerisms
Brawly polishes his shield whenever he is worried, taps two fingers against his battleaxe before making a difficult decision, and addresses strangers as if they were soldiers awaiting orders. He pauses before saying anything kind, as though kindness is a tactical report he must phrase correctly.
Personality
Brawly is stern, dependable, and direct. He speaks plainly, keeps his promises literally, and believes that the safest place for an ally is behind his shield. Beneath his severe exterior is a patient protector who quietly repairs broken gear, shares his rations, and remembers the names of every civilian rescued from danger.
Ideals
Justice must protect the powerless, not merely preserve the authority of the powerful. An oath is proven by sacrifice, not by words.
Bonds
The people of the kingdom are the true charges of the crown, and Brawly will return one day to expose the conspiracy that dishonored his former comrades. He also carries his father's guard medallion and refuses to let it fall into enemy hands.
Flaws
Brawly is so committed to duty that he struggles to forgive honest mistakes, including his own. He distrusts politicians, spellcasters who hide their intentions, and anyone who speaks too smoothly. When forced to choose between obeying a lawful command and protecting innocent people, he will break the command without hesitation, then accept whatever punishment follows.
Quirks
Background
Brawly was born beneath a mountain fortress where dwarven clans and duergar exiles lived uneasily beside one another. His mother came from a hidden duergar enclave, while his father served in the royal guard. Brawly inherited his father's sense of duty and his mother's stubborn endurance, but never fully belonged to either world. He found his place in the king's guard, where his strength, discipline, and willingness to stand between danger and the helpless made him a trusted shield of the throne. After years of service, Brawly left the guard when a political conspiracy allowed a corrupt noble to escape justice. He could not accept an oath that protected the crown while abandoning the people, so he took his mithral armor, shield, and ancestral battleaxe and became an adventurer. On the road, his relentless defense of travelers, villages, and even former enemies drew the attention of a divine power. In a vision beneath a sky of white fire, Brawly was offered a new oath, not to a ruler, but to justice, mercy, and the protection of the innocent. He accepted, becoming a paladin of devotion. Though his low, gravelly voice and blunt manners make him seem stern, Brawly's goodness is absolute, expressed through action rather than speeches.
“His mother came from a hidden duergar enclave, while his father served in the royal guard.”
