Appearance
Cleetus Bogwhistle stands just 3 feet tall and weighs a surprisingly dense 120 pounds. His wild white hair sticks out in every direction like a nest hit by lightning, framing a tan-white face and piercing blue eyes that flicker between manic mischief and razor focus. He is a swamp-bred gnome in practical travel clothes marked by mud stains, tool loops, scorch marks, and the kind of pockets that seem to contain far too many springs, gears, and tiny bolts. He carries a blunderbuss named Bertha and moves with the restless energy of someone always listening for danger, or inspiration.
Mannerisms
He tilts his head like he is listening to machinery only he can hear, mutters calculations under his breath, and punctuates important thoughts by tapping his blunderbuss or adjusting imaginary goggles. When excited, he grins too wide, points at an object with both hands, and says things like, 'Now that there is a problem worth fixing.'
Personality
Cleetus is loud in spirit, weird in presentation, and frighteningly observant when it matters. He speaks like a backwoods ramble crossed with a workshop lecture, and he enjoys being underestimated because it gives him room to surprise people. He is quick to laugh, quick to improvise, and quicker still to help someone in danger, especially if that danger looks smug.
Ideals
Freedom. No swamp, noble, monster, or magistrate gets to decide who is allowed to survive. Clever people should use their gifts to protect the small, the strange, and the underestimated.
Bonds
The Blackmire Fens made him, and he feels responsible for anyone who cannot defend themselves there or anywhere else. He keeps a bundle of swamp charms and broken gear from old friends and fallen hunters, and he refuses to let the memory of the marsh swallow their names. He also has one obsessive bond to the rumored beast called the Big Mud Daddy, which he treats as a personal destiny, a scientific challenge, and a matter of honor.
Flaws
He cannot resist pressing a button, yanking a lever, or testing a suspicious contraption, even when common sense begs him not to. He talks to his inventions as though they can hear him, and sometimes he seems disappointed when they do not answer. He underestimates danger when he thinks he has already solved the problem, which means he occasionally walks straight into the second trap while admiring the first one.
Quirks
Background
Cleetus Bogwhistle was born in the Blackmire Fens, where the swamp teaches faster than any school and failure tends to bite. While other gnomes learned polite crafts, family trades, and proper manners, Cleetus learned how to keep breathing when the mud sucked at his boots and the dark water moved on its own. He scavenged driftwood, rusted scrap, monster bones, and broken mechanisms from the marsh, then turned them into traps, tools, and the occasional glorious disaster. By the time he was old enough to shave, he had already become a local legend, the sort of foolhardy hero who could outthink a leech swarm and annoy a crocodile into a ditch. As he grew, so did his reputation. He chased swamp horrors into deadfalls, lured predators with clacking decoy ducks, and discovered that people trusted a crazy little gnome far less than they should, which was exactly how he liked it. Behind the wild talk and soot-blackened grin was a careful engineer who measured angles, counted escape routes, and knew precisely how much swamp gas could be safely weaponized, and then added a little more anyway. His greatest invention, Bertha, is a blunderbuss of dubious origin, impossible tuning, and devastating effect, and Cleetus will not explain it to anyone who asks, because, in his words, 'If I tell ya how it works, it'll stop workin'. That's science.' Now he travels beyond the fens to hunt bigger monsters, gather stranger parts, and prove that the greatest beasts in the world are simply puzzles with teeth.
