Appearance
A tall, broad-shouldered wood elf with weathered bronze skin, long ash-brown hair tied with strips of green cloth, and pale gray eyes that rarely stop scanning the horizon. His left cheek bears three faint vertical scars from a border skirmish. He wears worn leather armor beneath a dark green military cloak, carries a longbow across his back, and keeps a polished spear at his side.
Mannerisms
Cael habitually positions himself where he can see every entrance. He checks the wind before speaking, cleans his weapons after every fight, and addresses unfamiliar allies by rank until invited to use their names.
Personality
Quiet, vigilant, and methodical. Cael speaks in concise observations rather than opinions, but his dry humor appears when others least expect it. He is patient with frightened civilians, respectful toward capable warriors, and visibly uncomfortable receiving praise.
Ideals
Duty. The first responsibility of a soldier is to protect the people behind him, not to win praise for standing in front.
Bonds
The surviving members of his old patrol are his family, and he will risk himself to protect them or clear their names. He also carries the unit's broken standard, which he intends to return to the families of the fallen.
Flaws
Cael obeys orders too readily when lives are at stake, even after experience taught him that authority can be wrong. He is slow to forgive himself, suspicious of charismatic leaders, and sometimes treats companions like soldiers under his command rather than equals.
Quirks
Background
Cael Thorneleaf was raised among the outer watch of an elven woodland, where his people measured time in generations but danger arrived in an instant. His unusually sturdy frame and sharp eyes made him valuable as a scout, and his patience made him useful as a sentry. When raiders began crossing the forest borders, Cael joined the woodland levy, eventually serving as a pathfinder and forward archer. He learned to read broken grass, disturbed birdsong, and the silence that falls when prey senses a hunter nearby. Years of military service taught Cael discipline, fieldcraft, and the grim arithmetic of survival. His unit defended villages, escorted refugees, and hunted enemies through terrain where ordinary soldiers became lost. During one disastrous winter patrol, Cael followed orders that led his squad into an ambush. He survived, but several soldiers under his command did not. He left active service carrying his rank, his scars, and a distrust of commanders who value territory more than lives. Now he travels as a ranger, hunting threats before they reach the settlements he once failed to protect. He is neither eager for glory nor interested in conquest. He simply believes that someone must stand watch.
