Appearance
Harold is a lean male aarakocra with mottled russet and cream feathers, a narrow black beak, and pale amber eyes that rarely seem focused on the same thing for long. His left wing has several unevenly regrown feathers from an old magical accident. He wears a weather-stained blue scarf, a patched travel coat adapted for flight, and a battered crystal pendant that he insists contains an important memory.
Mannerisms
Harold tilts his head sharply when listening, taps his beak against his crystal pendant when thinking, and occasionally spreads both wings as if trying to catch a breeze indoors. He speaks in sudden bursts, then pauses mid-sentence while searching for a word that may belong to a missing memory.
Personality
Harold is energetic, distractible, and strangely sincere. He treats farmers, guards, nobles, and powerful wizards with nearly identical curiosity. He loves hearing people describe their earliest memories, because he hopes someone else's story will unlock his own. Beneath his humor is a persistent fear that the person he used to be was worse than the person he has become.
Ideals
Freedom. No one should be owned by tradition, prophecy, or the expectations of others. Harold would rather make a foolish choice of his own than live safely inside someone else's plan.
Bonds
The village he accidentally saved still sends him letters, and Harold will risk almost anything to protect its people. He is also determined to find the mountain shrine where his memories disappeared.
Flaws
Harold becomes reckless whenever he thinks a forgotten memory is close to returning. He distrusts clear answers, assumes coincidences are magical signs, and sometimes follows an exciting possibility even when everyone else can see it is obviously dangerous.
Quirks
Background
Harold Styles was once a celebrated sky-runner in a remote aarakocra settlement, known for carrying messages between isolated farms and mountain villages. During a festival, he found a strange translucent fungus growing near an ancient shrine and ate it after hearing that it could reveal hidden truths. The experience became a storm of impossible colors, voices, and magical pressure. When Harold awoke, part of the village granary had been transformed into a floating cloud of glowing grain, and several days of his memory were simply gone. He remembers that something spoke to him from beyond the clouds, but he cannot remember whether it was a god, a dragon, or himself. Since then, Harold has wandered from settlement to settlement, helping ordinary people with dangerous problems in exchange for stories about his past. His innate magic erupts unpredictably when he becomes frightened, excited, or intensely nostalgic. He knows LSD is a hard drug and treats his old experiment as a painful mistake rather than a path to enlightenment, though he still worries that the experience unlocked something inside him. Harold became a folk hero after accidentally saving a farming village from a bandit raid by turning the attackers' weapons into harmless garden tools. He now travels to recover his missing memories and discover what truly happened at the shrine.
