Appearance
A lean human woman with olive skin, dark brown eyes, and black hair cut bluntly at the shoulders. Her face is calm to the point of vacancy, as if she is listening to something far away. Fine scarification traces a nearly invisible lattice along her jaw. One tendon at her throat is wrapped in a dark, vein-like cord beneath the skin. A thorn pierces her left earlobe, from which a bead of black ichor occasionally forms. Around her right wrist, a blood-red thread has sunk beneath the flesh and pulses faintly when she lies.
Mannerisms
Mireia speaks softly and precisely, never raising her voice. She touches the thread beneath her wrist before answering difficult questions. When someone nearby begins to cry, she turns her head slightly as if checking the direction of a distant bell.
Personality
Mireia is unnervingly courteous, patient with the frightened, and incapable of pretending that ordinary cruelty is ordinary. She observes people with the quiet concentration of a physician, but she avoids looking directly at children and never permits anyone to bind her wrists.
Ideals
Consent is the boundary between sacrifice and cruelty. No revelation, god, patron, or cause has the right to cross it without permission.
Bonds
She will find the novice whose name was erased, even if the girl now lives as a stranger to herself. Mireia also keeps the torn strip of pact vellum hidden inside her spellbook, because destroying it would mean surrendering the only proof that the Listener ever existed.
Flaws
She cannot tolerate anyone thanking her for pain, even pain she did not cause. When frightened, she becomes obedient and agreeable, which makes her most dangerous because she may begin following the Listener's old habits before realizing what she is doing.
Quirks
Background
Mireia Kivuli was born above a dye works in the poorer quarter of Toledo, where the air tasted of mordant, iron, and old river water. Her mother belonged to a lay congregation called the Choir of the Open Wound, a cult that taught suffering was not punishment but proof that the soul remained awake. Mireia learned their prayers, copied their penitential ledgers, and became skilled at tending wounds without asking whether the wounds were deserved. Her gift for calm speech drew the attention of the cult's hidden superior, a presence known only as the Listener Beneath the Choir. The pact was written in blood on a strip of vellum and sewn into Mireia's wrist. In exchange for forbidden insight and the power to make others hear thoughts they had buried, she agreed to surrender one cherished certainty each year, then one memory, then one name. She gave the memory of her father's face, the ability to feel disgust at the cult's rites, seven years of her expected lifespan, and finally the true name of the novice she loved, which the Listener consumed while Mireia watched the girl's identity unravel in the minds of everyone who knew her. The escalating demand that broke the pact was simple in wording and monstrous in meaning. The Listener demanded Mireia bring it the suffering of an innocent child, not by killing the child, but by making the child willingly thank her for it. Mireia refused, tore the vellum from her wrist, and felt the pact snap like a tendon. Now the Listener is asking for the next payment anyway. It wants Mireia's ordinary human face, the last part of herself untouched by revelation. It sends dreams in which she peels away her own expression and finds an eye beneath it. The tell others notice is that conversations seem to pause half a heartbeat before Mireia answers, as though everyone nearby has briefly forgotten what they meant to say. No one can identify the change, but people leave her presence with the uneasy conviction that they have just confessed something.
“Mireia learned their prayers, copied their penitential ledgers, and became skilled at tending wounds without asking whether the wounds were deserved.”
