- Arcane RecoveryLevel 1
Once per day when you finish a short rest, you can choose expended spell slots to recover. The spell slots can have a combined level that is equal to or less than half your wizard level (rounded up).
- Sculpt SpellsLevel 2
You can create pockets of relative safety within the effects of your evocation spells. When you cast an evocation spell that affects other creatures you can see, you can choose a number of them equal to 1 plus the spell level. The chosen creatures automatically succeed on their saving throws and take no damage if they would normally take half.
- Potent CantripLevel 5
Your damaging cantrips affect even creatures that avoid the brunt of the effect. When a creature succeeds on a saving throw against your cantrip, the creature takes half the cantrip damage.

Gear
4 itemsGear
- Aethelred Signet RingA tarnished silver ring with a faded crest of a quill and a falling star.
- Arcane Focus (Crystal)A cracked geode that pulses with blue light.
- SpellbookA heavy leather-bound book titled 'The Imperfections of Arcane Calculus'.
- Fine ClothesRagged and moth-eaten but clearly once-magnificent velvet robes.
Appearance
Valerius is a gaunt man with parchment-thin skin that seems to stretch over his sharp, prominent cheekbones. His hair is a thin, snowy white wisp that escapes from under a velvet skullcap. He is constantly shrouded in oversized, moth-eaten noble robes that trail behind him. His eyes are his most striking feature, a piercing and vibrant violet that dart about with terrifying intensity, noticing every minute detail of his environment while his body remains fragile and slow.
Mannerisms
He has a habit of tracing invisible equations in the air with his skeletal fingers. He walks with a slow, deliberate shuffle as if the air itself were made of heavy liquid.
Personality
He speaks with the haughty cadence of a man who still expects a footman to open his doors, though he hasn't owned a door in twenty years. Valerius is obsessively intellectual, often ignoring basic physical needs like food or sleep to calculate the precise geometry of a ley line. He treats everyone as an equal student, which usually results in him lecturing peasants on the molecular density of their mud with genuine, though detached, kindness.
Ideals
Logic. The world is a system of rules that must be understood and perfected to ensure the survival of civilization.
Bonds
I carry the last library of House Aethelred in my mind, and I must record my perfected formulas before my failing heart stops.
Flaws
I am so preoccupied with the vast secrets of the universe that I often forget to eat or notice that I am bleeding.
Quirks
Background
Valerius is the last surviving member of House Aethelred, a family once renowned for their contributions to magical theory before their estates were seized by the crown for unpaid debts and perceived madness. While his siblings fled to find manual labor or petty merchant roles, Valerius stayed in the ancestral library until the literal roof collapsed. He realized that modern spellcasting was stagnant and efficient, lacking the raw power his ancestors once commanded through pure mathematical focus. Over decades of poverty, he refined standard spells, stripping away the safety nets meant for weaker minds to create his enhanced variations. His body has withered under the strain of these experimental castings and a life of academic seclusion. He now wanders the world, a forgotten lord of a non-existent land, carrying the singular dream of founding an academy where magic is practiced as a precision science rather than a convenient tool. He believes that the universe is a puzzle that only he has the patience to solve.
