Appearance
SOD is a tall, heavily built warforged assembled from dark ironwood, blackened steel, and dull brass fittings. His face is a smooth angular mask with a narrow horizontal visor that glows a steady amber. He stands unnervingly still when waiting, distributing his weight evenly through both feet like a statue set into the earth. A faded red military sash is wrapped around his left shoulder, its fabric worn thin where his metal collar repeatedly catches it. His armor is practical chain mail beneath reinforced steel plates, and every piece bears small stamped tally marks recording campaigns, repairs, and fulfilled orders. His movements are economical and deliberate, with the quiet precision of a siege engine adjusting its aim.
Mannerisms
When addressed, SOD turns his entire upper body toward the speaker before answering. He pauses for exactly one breath before giving an opinion, as though consulting an internal chain of command. Before battle, he taps the rim of his shield three times. When uncertain, he quietly recites the names of fallen soldiers in chronological order.
Personality
SOD is restrained, observant, and intensely dependable. He speaks in concise military phrases, but he listens with unusual patience and remembers small details about everyone in his company. He is not emotionless. His emotions appear as changes in procedure, such as polishing his shield when anxious or becoming excessively formal when angry. He prefers honest disagreement to false reassurance and regards competence as a form of kindness.
Ideals
Duty. A command is only worthy of obedience if it protects the people placed beneath it. If an order sacrifices them needlessly, following it is not discipline, it is failure.
Bonds
The surviving soldiers of the Daedalus Campaign are his unit, whether they forgive him or not. He will spend his life protecting them and uncovering who issued the order that destroyed their army.
Flaws
SOD obeys clear orders too readily, especially when they come from someone who sounds confident. He also records every mistake in exact detail, treating self-forgiveness as a form of defective maintenance.
Quirks
Background
Shame of Daedalus, universally shortened to SOD, was built in a military foundry as part of a batch of battlefield-support warforged designed to coordinate infantry lines and maintain siege formations. His designation was originally an acronym for Strategic Operations Division, but the name changed after the Daedalus Campaign. During that campaign, SOD followed an evacuation order exactly as written, abandoning a bridge that officers had assumed he would defend. The bridge fell, hundreds died, and the surviving commanders blamed the machine for possessing too much obedience and not enough judgment. The word shame was painted across his identification plate as a public warning, and SOD adopted it as his name. When the war ended, SOD discovered that orders were scarce, but danger was not. He became a soldier for hire, carrying the habits of military life into every expedition. He studies terrain before sleeping, counts exits before entering a room, and treats every companion as a unit whose survival is partly his responsibility. He now seeks the truth behind the Daedalus order, not to clear his name, but to determine whether his failure was obedience, cowardice, or the first decision he ever made that was truly his own.
