Appearance
Harlow is a lean, wiry human with weather-browned skin, strong hands, and a compact build shaped by years of martial training and kitchen work. Their dark hair is kept short except for a long braided lock behind one ear, tied with colored cooking twine. Harlow's voice is usually warm and quick, with a faint rasp from years of calling orders across busy kitchens. When startled or angry, their speech becomes unnervingly quiet, and their breathing shifts into a measured rhythm that signals an imminent strike. Their robes are practical rather than ceremonial, patched at the elbows and stained with the honest evidence of herbs, smoke, and travel. A broad cloth sash holds spice packets, chopsticks, and a small wooden spoon carved with the symbol of an open hand.
Mannerisms
Harlow tastes the air before entering a kitchen or tavern, unconsciously counts breaths during tense conversations, and taps two fingers against their thumb when considering a problem. They address cooks, servants, and soldiers with the same direct courtesy. When angry, they stop gesturing, lower their voice, and become completely still.
Personality
Harlow is curious, sociable, and relentlessly enthusiastic about food. They collect recipes as eagerly as other adventurers collect weapons, ask strangers where they learned to cook, and believe nearly every disagreement deserves to be discussed over a hot meal. Beneath the cheer is a vigilant survivor who notices exits, watches hands, and dislikes sudden shouting. Harlow is gentle with frightened people and merciless toward anyone who uses discipline as an excuse to hurt the helpless.
Ideals
Mercy. Strength exists to protect people, not to make them obedient. No lesson, tradition, or victory is worth becoming cruel.
Bonds
The merciful monks who gave Harlow a second chance are their chosen family. Harlow sends them letters, recipes, and a portion of every unusual coin earned. They also secretly hope to return one day to the cruel monastery, not for revenge, but to free any children still trapped there.
Flaws
Harlow has little patience for authority dressed up as wisdom. They can mistake correction for control, react too sharply to harsh voices, and sometimes abandon a sound plan simply because it resembles an order from the old monastery. They also judge people by how they treat food, servers, and animals, often more quickly than fairness allows.

Background
Harlow was left as a baby at a small monastery tucked into a cold valley, with no name, no family history, and only a faded scrap of red cloth wrapped around them. The monks raised Harlow according to a severe doctrine of discipline. Meals were gray porridge, boiled roots, and thin broth, and every mistake was answered with punishment. Harlow learned the monastery's martial forms quickly, mastering footwork, balance, and open-handed strikes while still very young. The monks praised the skill but never the child. When Harlow finally disobeyed an order to hurt another novice, the monks beat them badly enough to make escape seem easier than staying. Harlow fled into the world with a stolen blanket, a bruised body, and a deep suspicion of anyone who called cruelty a virtue. The first free meal Harlow ever ate was a bowl of fragrant stew bought by a traveling peddler. It contained roasted onion, pepper, beans, and a bright green herb Harlow could not identify. The meal changed the direction of their life. Harlow began traveling from town to town, working wherever food was prepared, trading kitchen labor for recipes, stories, and a place to sleep. They learned that ingredients had histories, that every region had its own way of showing love, and that a full stomach could make strangers into friends. As a teenager, Harlow found work with a different order of monks, one devoted to mercy rather than punishment. They taught Harlow that discipline should protect the vulnerable, that strength was a promise rather than a privilege, and that even a fighter should know how to mend what they break. Harlow now travels as a soldier, cook, and wandering disciple, seeking new flavors, new people, and proof that kindness can be stronger than fear.
