Kagati is a tall, broad-shouldered warforged built from dark ironwood, riveted steel, and weathered brass. His face is a smooth mask with a narrow horizontal grille for a mouth and two amber lenses set beneath a heavy brow. His military coat is too large through the shoulders and patched with mismatched canvas, while the left cuff has been scrubbed and oiled until it is nearly black. He wears a single carefully maintained brass identification plate at his throat, though its serial number has been deliberately filed away. When he laughs, which is rare, the grille parts in a precise mechanical imitation of a grin, revealing rows of small, blunt metal teeth. His movements are economical and deliberate, except when a command reminds him of the army, at which point one hand begins quietly counting down from five.

Kagati is dry, observant, and difficult to impress. He speaks in concise reports until someone asks about his past, at which point he becomes evasive and unexpectedly philosophical. He has a soldier's instinct for danger but a growing curiosity about ordinary life, especially meals, jokes, celebrations, and choices that serve no tactical purpose.

Kagati was one unit among thousands of nameless warforged infantry, assembled, armed, and sent wherever an officer required bodies that would not flee. He remembers campaigns as fragments of weather, shouted coordinates, mud packed into his joints, and the dull certainty that somebody else had decided what his life was worth. He was destroyed on a battlefield whose banners rotted away before anyone recorded the victory. His body remained among broken wagons and rusting weapons for years, an unremarkable heap of useful parts. Then something noticed him. Kagati does not know whether it was a god, a weapon, a spirit, or merely an intelligence passing through the dark between worlds. The presence drew a black-edged blade from the wreckage and placed its hand against Kagati's ruined chest. Power entered him without ceremony. His core restarted. There was no prophecy, no chosen-one revelation, and no explanation. Just coincidence, as far as he is concerned. Now the blade's shadow answers when he calls, and his magic carries the cold pressure of an unseen will. Kagati travels because standing still feels too much like waiting to be used again. He takes contracts, chooses his own targets, and intends to discover whether freedom is anything more than selecting which orders to obey.
