Appearance
Dr. Thaddeus Rattenfänger is a lean, long-limbed tiefling with deep red skin, swept-back black horns, and a narrow tail that curls thoughtfully around the leg of his chair. He dresses in well-maintained scale mail beneath a dark green ranger's cloak, with small brass spectacles perched low on his nose despite having perfectly good eyesight. His most immediately noticeable feature is his voice. Before speaking, he draws a careful breath through his nose, clears his throat twice, and then delivers every sentence in the measured tone of a rural physician explaining an unpleasant diagnosis. He carries a longbow, paired shortswords, a shovel, and a battered physician's case filled with herbs, traps, and rat-catching equipment.
Mannerisms
Before speaking, he inhales through his nose, clears his throat twice, and briefly adjusts his spectacles. He addresses frightened villagers as if they are patients in his clinic. When considering a trail, he crouches and taps the ground with one finger while silently counting under his breath.
Personality
Thaddeus is intensely observant, professionally courteous, and incapable of leaving an unanswered question alone. He treats wilderness travel like a medical rounds schedule, checking tracks, weather, water, and everyone else's minor injuries with equal seriousness. His confidence is genuine but not entirely earned, and he enjoys using elaborate academic language for simple ideas. Beneath the eccentricity, he is fiercely compassionate toward common people and surprisingly gentle with animals.
Ideals
Prevention. The best disaster is the one no one ever has to know about. Knowledge belongs in the hands of those willing to use it to protect people, not in the hands of institutions that hoard it for prestige.
Bonds
The people of his home mill town trusted him when no one else would, and he will risk almost anything to protect ordinary communities from predators, corrupt officials, and preventable disasters.
Flaws
He assumes that every problem has a hidden cause, every authority is concealing something, and every person who dislikes him is probably guilty of poor sanitation. He can be needlessly condescending when frightened, and he would rather risk a dangerous experiment than admit he does not understand a phenomenon.
Quirks
Background
Thaddeus was born in a mill town where people crossed the street when they saw his horns and crossed themselves when they heard his name. He learned early that fear was often less dangerous than rats, so he began studying both. By adolescence he had become an amateur natural philosopher, tracking infestations, cataloguing poisons, and treating the bites and fevers that followed. His reputation changed after a grain plague threatened the town. While the local magistrate argued about quarantine, Thaddeus organized the millers, mapped the sewer tunnels, and led a night expedition into the flooded foundations. He destroyed the nest, exposed the corrupt grain inspector who had caused the infestation, and saved dozens of families. The grateful townsfolk called him a doctor, whether or not any academy agreed with them, and gave him the title he still uses with complete seriousness. Now Thaddeus travels as a ranger, investigating wilderness threats, strange animal behavior, and the creatures that prey upon isolated settlements. He claims his work is a continuation of public health, but he is also pursuing rumors of a subterranean intelligence that breeds vermin in abandoned ruins. His folk-hero reputation opens doors that his infernal appearance once closed, though he remains suspicious of anyone who offers admiration too quickly. He prefers practical heroism, clean water, reliable maps, and the quiet satisfaction of preventing a disaster before anyone notices it was coming.
