Appearance
Foss is a broad-shouldered human man with weathered bronze skin, a powerful build, and long black hair threaded with premature silver. His left eye is gray, while his right eye glows faintly violet when he invokes his patron's power. Ash-colored markings curl from his right palm up his forearm, remnants of the pact he once used for selfish ends. He wears battered leather armor beneath a dark travel cloak, carries a blackened staff, and keeps a small iron lantern at his belt. Despite his ominous appearance, his expression is watchful and compassionate.
Mannerisms
Foss pauses before entering any doorway, studying the shadows as if they might be listening. He speaks in a low, deliberate voice and often rubs the ash-mark on his palm when tempted or angry. When casting a spell, he briefly closes his glowing eye and exhales as though releasing smoke.
Personality
Foss is patient, observant, and quietly protective. He prefers listening to boasting and usually studies a person for several moments before deciding whether to trust them. He is gentle with frightened animals and strangers, but becomes cold and frighteningly direct when someone abuses power. Though he claims to have abandoned his old life, he still carries himself like a man expecting pursuit.
Ideals
Redemption. The power that once corrupted me can still be turned toward mercy. What matters is not where darkness comes from, but whether I choose to use it to protect or to destroy.
Bonds
Foss is sworn to protect isolated settlements and travelers who cannot defend themselves. He also seeks a way to sever the last hidden clause of his infernal pact before his former patron can claim him.
Flaws
Foss believes he can control the darkness forever, even though he has already seen how subtly it changes the people who use it. He is suspicious of authority, quick to trespass when he believes someone is in danger, and has a dangerous tendency to bargain with evil forces if he thinks the alternative is worse.

Background
Foss was born beneath an open sky and raised among a scattered human wilderness community that followed game trails, mountain passes, and seasonal rivers. He learned to read weather in the taste of the wind, find water beneath stone, and cross hostile country without leaving a trail. As a young man, he became obsessed with the ancient ruins beyond his people's hunting grounds. In those places he found a sealed shrine and heard a voice promising him the power to protect his people from raiders, monsters, and famine. The voice belonged to a fiend, and Foss accepted its bargain without understanding the price. For years, Foss walked a path of darkness. He hunted those who opposed him, wielded shadow-flame against his enemies, and became feared as much as he was respected. His turning point came when his patron demanded the sacrifice of an innocent village to fulfill an ancient clause in the pact. Foss refused. He broke the shrine's seal, redirected the fiend's power against its own servants, and saved the village, though the act left a permanent stain of eldritch darkness upon his soul. Foss now travels as an Outlander and reluctant guardian, using the same sinister magic to defend the helpless. He knows the darkness still answers when he calls, but he intends to decide what that darkness is used for.
