Action

  • Primeval AwarenessLevel 3

Lalli can use an action and a ranger spell slot to sense whether certain creature types are present within 1 mile, or within 6 miles in his favored terrain: aberrations, celestials, dragons, elementals, fey, fiends, and undead. This sense does not reveal their location or number.

Always on

  • Favored EnemyLevel 1

Choose beasts as a favored enemy. Lalli has advantage on Wisdom (Survival) checks to track them and on Intelligence checks to recall information about them. He also knows one language spoken by his favored enemy, chosen here as Giant.

  • Natural ExplorerLevel 1

Choose arctic terrain as a favored terrain. Lalli gains the ranger’s exploration benefits there, including improved navigation, tracking, foraging, and travel with his group.

  • Fighting Style: ArcheryLevel 2

Lalli chose the Archery style, gaining a +2 bonus to attack rolls with ranged weapons.

  • SpellcastingLevel 2

Lalli can cast ranger spells using Wisdom as his spellcasting ability. He knows four ranger spells and has four 1st-level spell slots.

  • Hunter's Prey: Colossus SlayerLevel 3

Lalli chose the Hunter archetype. Once on each of his turns when he hits a creature with a weapon attack, he can deal an extra 1d8 damage if that creature is below its hit point maximum.

  • Extra AttackLevel 5

Lalli can attack twice, instead of once, whenever he takes the Attack action on his turn.

Appearance

Lalli is a pale, broad-shouldered man with ash-white blond hair, clear blue eyes, and a quiet, weathered face. His Norse is deliberate and awkward, each word placed carefully, as if he were setting a snare. He stands with his weight evenly planted and checks the knot at his belt whenever a conversation turns to danger. His scale shirt is patched and practical, and his bowstring is kept meticulously dry.

Mannerisms

He places each Norse word with conspicuous care, sometimes repeating a phrase under his breath before saying it aloud. When talk turns serious, his thumb checks the knot at his belt.

Personality

Stoic and attentive, Lalli speaks little until he has watched a person work. He is patient with fear, awkward speech, and honest mistakes, but takes a challenge as a promise that must be answered.

Ideals

A good life is built from useful work, a roof that holds through winter, and people who know they can rely on you.

Bonds

His younger brother’s bold, ridiculous claim of victory still makes Lalli smile. He wants to earn enough to give them both a comfortable home, and he keeps a careful eye on the little serf and the Viking’s younger brother when trouble starts.

Flaws

Once someone questions his courage, Lalli has difficulty weighing the challenge against the cost. He also mistakes stubborn silence for self-control and can be slow to admit that he needs help.

Quirks

Tests a surface with his boot before trusting it, even on dry ground.
Keeps a tiny strip of net cord from home and ties it into a new knot whenever he camps.
Calls his brother's technicality victory a fair win whenever anyone teases him about it.

Background

Lalli Otuskkion grew up far from the Norse settlements, in a household where survival was shared work. His father taught him to read tracks, set nets, dress a catch, and judge how much ice a man could trust. His mother taught Lalli and his younger brother the family’s old charms and hearth-lore. Lalli speaks the Norse tongue awkwardly, but with care and intention. He says his name as he learned it, and lets others decide whether to stumble over it. After years spent apart from settled life, Lalli accepted work offered by a Viking leader, curious about the people and lands beyond his own. He was startled to find that the leader’s small companion was a troll changeling, and privately disappointed that the stranger’s magic seemed less impressive than the stories promised. The little serf, the changeling’s younger brother, soon won his affection, as did the Viking leader’s own younger brother. Lalli respects the leader’s nerve but doubts his common sense. He still carries the memory of his own younger brother challenging their father at home, then claiming victory because their father had died and, as Lalli puts it, ‘lost on a technicality.’ Now he seeks work, treasure, and enough coin for a good house where he might finally settle. He has never refused a challenge, and rarely waits for one to find him.
