Appearance
Eru is a compact, broad-shouldered lightfoot halfling with weather-browned skin, thick chestnut hair, and an unusually serious expression for someone so small. He keeps his beard trimmed close and his clothing carefully mended, though his boots are perpetually dusted with road grit. He walks with a rolling, purposeful gait and favors his left side slightly when carrying his shield. A sprig of rowan is woven into his green cloak, and his hands are rough from farming, woodworking, and years spent tending stubborn soil.
Mannerisms
Eru plants his feet wide when making an important point, pats his shield twice before entering danger, and unconsciously brushes dirt from his palms whenever he is nervous. He addresses animals as if they are fellow workers and pauses before answering difficult questions, as though waiting to hear what the soil would advise.
Personality
Eru is practical, patient, and quietly warm. He prefers useful questions to clever ones and would rather repair a fence than attend a feast, though he enjoys good food and lively village music when the work is done. He is protective of the vulnerable, suspicious of grand promises, and surprisingly funny when he relaxes. His courage is not flashy. It appears as a steady refusal to abandon anyone who has been placed in his care.
Ideals
Communities survive when ordinary people stand together. The land does not belong to the powerful, and no one should be helpless simply because they were born without wealth or influence.
Bonds
The fields, creek, and people of his home village are his responsibility. He also carries a small clay vial of clean water from the restored creek and will do almost anything to prevent another community from suffering the same fate.
Flaws
Eru is stubborn to the point of foolishness when he believes someone is being bullied or exploited. He has little patience for ceremony, aristocratic excuses, or people who waste food, and he sometimes mistakes caution for cowardice. Praise makes him uncomfortable, so he often responds to admiration by taking on an even more reckless task.
Quirks
Background
Eru was born in a hedgerow village where halfling families cultivated barley, medicinal herbs, and the enormous pumpkins that made the settlement famous in three neighboring counties. He learned the rhythms of the land before he learned his letters, could tell a healthy root from a poisonous one by scent alone, and spent more time talking to field mice than to visiting merchants. His life changed when a mining concern upstream poisoned the village creek and threatened to seize the surrounding farms. Eru organized the farmers, sabotaged the mine's sluice gates, and guided a group of children through the old badger tunnels to safety when the river broke its banks. The mine was eventually abandoned, and the villagers began calling him a hero, a title he finds embarrassing but secretly treasures. The victory left Eru aware that courage and a strong back were not always enough to protect the places he loved. An elderly druid who had helped cleanse the creek took him as an informal student, teaching him the names of birds, the language of roots, and the patient disciplines of druidic magic. Eru now travels beyond his village to learn how to defend the wider natural world, carrying his old shovel as both a practical tool and a reminder that every great cause begins with ordinary people willing to dig in. He still thinks like a farmer, values useful work over grand speeches, and distrusts anyone who has never had mud under their fingernails.
