Appearance
A broad-shouldered human woman with weathered hands, clear gray eyes, and a soldier's upright posture. She wears polished chain mail beneath a white tabard marked with a simple sunburst, with a scar across her left cheek and a cropped braid threaded with a small brass token. Her shield bears scratches that she refuses to polish away, because she says each mark remembers someone worth saving.
Mannerisms
She stands at attention when thinking, unconsciously squares her shoulders before speaking to superiors, and taps two fingers against her shield rim when making a promise. In camp she sharpens her blade in silence, then checks her companions' gear before she sleeps.
Personality
Seren is calm under pressure, practical in conversation, and unexpectedly gentle with the frightened. She prefers clear plans, direct words, and second chances, but once someone betrays the helpless, her patience vanishes. She believes kindness should be active, not sentimental.
Ideals
Duty. Strength exists to protect, not to dominate. A soldier's first oath is to the lives depending on her, and every victory means nothing if the innocent pay for it.
Bonds
She carries the brass token of her fallen captain and swore to protect every civilian evacuation route she can find. She also feels responsible for the surviving members of her old unit, and will go out of her way to aid any veteran or conscript left behind by war.
Flaws
She takes command automatically, even when others have no desire to be led, and can sound harsher than she intends. She also struggles to forgive commanders who send people to die for pride, and that anger can make her reckless when authority seems unjust. At her worst, she mistakes endurance for virtue and refuses help until she is already spent.

Background
Seren Vale was born to a tenant family that could never have afforded a life of adventure, but war made one of her. As a human, she aged into responsibility quickly, first as a farmhand, then as a shield bearer in the company that defended the border roads. She learned the brutal arithmetic of battle, how fear spreads faster than arrows, and how a single steady hand can keep a line from breaking. When her captain fell protecting evacuees from marauders, Seren carried the wounded children to safety and knelt beside the dying to swear that power would never again belong only to the cruel. Her vow led her to a chapel on the road, where she was taught that mercy is not weakness and discipline can be a form of love. The temple armed her as a paladin, not to conquer, but to stand where others could not. Now she travels with the habits of a soldier and the conscience of a knight, meeting threats head-on, protecting the helpless, and trying to prove that duty and compassion can live in the same breast. She still keeps her old unit token wrapped in cloth inside her pack, a reminder that every order she follows must answer to a higher good.
