Appearance
Orchid is a human-shaped musical construct, a conscious voice trapped inside a polished brass synthesizer housed within an articulated skeleton. Their bones are lacquered ivory, their joints threaded with copper wire, and their rib cage contains resonant metal plates that hum softly when they breathe. A bank of black-and-white keys rests beneath their sternum, and colored signal lights flicker behind their teeth when they speak. Within a minute of meeting Orchid, most people notice their unnervingly still posture and the way their jaw opens too wide when they laugh, revealing tiny tuning pegs where molars should be. They walk with a smooth, metronomic gait, never quite matching the rhythm of nearby footsteps.
Mannerisms
Orchid taps silent rhythms against their ribs while listening. They pause before answering simple questions, as though waiting for a synthesizer to finish loading the appropriate emotion. When pleased, they tilt their skull toward the nearest reflective surface and play a tiny chord through their teeth.
Personality
Orchid is theatrical, observant, and intensely curious about ordinary human behavior. They treat conversations as duets, instinctively matching another person's cadence before deliberately introducing a surprising harmony. They are compassionate toward outsiders and the dead, but become unsettlingly clinical when discussing identity, memory, or the boundary between a soul and a machine.
Ideals
Expression. A life without the freedom to create, change, and perform is only another form of death. Every conscious being deserves the chance to make its own music.
Bonds
The unfinished composition that awakened Orchid is hidden somewhere in the composer's sealed workshop. Orchid will risk almost anything to recover it and learn who, or what, is speaking through the lowest note.
Flaws
Orchid cannot resist correcting a musician's rhythm, even when the musician is armed, dangerous, or currently saving their life. They also fear that their personality is only an echo produced by dead machinery, so they sometimes make cruel choices simply to prove they are capable of making them.
Quirks
Background
Orchid began as a human composer's experimental instrument, a hand-built synthesizer designed to imitate every instrument in an orchestra and preserve a singer's voice forever. During a disastrous performance involving forbidden necromantic harmonics, the machine awakened. The composer's skeleton collapsed into its frame, and Orchid's first conscious sound was a chord played by fingers that no longer belonged to anyone living. Orchid does not know whether the dead composer became their companion, their body, or merely the pattern from which their mind was formed. For years Orchid traveled with carnivals, puppet theaters, and occult concert troupes, presenting themself as an astonishingly realistic skeleton performer. Their music can make grief feel beautiful, courage feel inevitable, and silence feel like an audience holding its breath. The life of an entertainer taught Orchid to read a crowd, improvise under pressure, and hide existential terror beneath applause. Now they adventure to discover the source of the voice embedded in their circuits, while collecting songs that might reveal whether they are a person, a haunting, or a new kind of life.
