Appearance
Bernard Veshar is a handsome human man of medium height, with dark eyes, short wavy black hair, and a neatly kept short stub beard. His lean, capable build shows the economy of a practiced guard rather than the bulk of a brawler. He has a small pale scar beneath his left ear and callused hands. He wears well-maintained plate armor over a dark blue surcoat, with a sturdy medium shield marked by several repaired cracks.
Mannerisms
Bernard checks door hinges, window latches, and the positions of chairs whenever he enters a room. When someone is angry, he lowers his voice instead of raising it. He rubs the edge of his shield with his thumb while thinking, and delivers dry remarks in the same calm tone he uses to discuss serious injuries.
Personality
Bernard is gentle, attentive, and difficult to provoke. He remembers small details about people, such as which knee hurts in cold weather or whether they take sugar in their tea. He prefers practical kindness to dramatic declarations and has a dry sense of humor that appears most often when circumstances are dangerous. He is comfortable being underestimated, provided nobody underestimates the danger facing someone under his protection.
Ideals
Protection is not grand or glorious. It is noticing who has been left behind and going back for them. Strength matters only when it is used to make someone else safer.
Bonds
Marcelline Qasbek is the person Bernard intends to come home to, no matter how far the road leads. He also feels responsible for the people of Karsk, especially the families who survived the winter riot because he refused to abandon the gate.
Flaws
Bernard is slow to admit when he is tired, hurt, or frightened, because he mistakes endurance for responsibility. He has an irritating habit of trying to mediate situations that require a firm refusal. When Marcelline is in danger, his patience can turn into reckless self-sacrifice, and he becomes much easier to provoke than he believes.
Quirks
Background
Bernard Veshar spent most of his adult life as a watchman in the market settlement of Karsk, a place too large to be called a village and too overlooked to attract a proper garrison. He learned the unglamorous arts of keeping people alive: separating drunks before knives came out, noticing which merchant wagons had false bottoms, and standing between frightened townsfolk and men who believed fear made them important. Bernard was never the loudest guard, nor the fastest to draw steel. He simply kept moving forward, shield raised, until the problem became manageable. During a winter riot caused by a failed harvest, Bernard held a narrow gate long enough for dozens of families to escape. He was left with broken ribs and a sword cut across his shoulder. Marcelline Qasbek, a traveling wizard healer, repaired the damage while impatiently explaining that fools who ignored evacuation orders deserved whatever bruises they received. Bernard proposed to her once he could breathe without wincing. They are now engaged, though Marcelline's work regularly takes her away from Karsk. Bernard adventured first to find her after a dangerous expedition went silent, and later because he discovered that protecting people sometimes means dealing with threats before they reach the walls. He carries a letter from her in an oilskin packet, along with her terse instructions about changing his bandages.
“Bernard was never the loudest guard, nor the fastest to draw steel.”
