Appearance
A broad-shouldered hill dwarf with a thick iron-gray beard braided with bronze rings, a scar split across one eyebrow, and forearms corded like ship rope. He wears practical soldier's gear reinforced with barbarian trophies, a weathered greataxe on his back, and keeps a stubborn, watchful stare that looks one part battlefield veteran, one part mountain bull about to charge.
Mannerisms
He speaks like he is giving orders on a noisy battlefield, even when asking for a drink. He taps two knuckles against his breastplate or beard ring before making a promise, and when angered he goes very still for a heartbeat, as if measuring the best angle for a charge.
Personality
Gruff, fearless, and unexpectedly protective, Borin is the sort of dwarf who will grumble at a stranger while still patching their wound. He respects competence, keeps his word even when it costs him, and prefers plain talk over clever lies. Beneath the hard shell, he has a dry sense of humor and a deep affection for underdogs, bad tavern stew, and anyone who keeps standing after being knocked down.
Ideals
Loyalty. A soldier stands by the people who bleed beside him, not the officers who merely issue orders.
Bonds
He keeps a dented soldier's token bearing the names of the fallen from his old unit, and he swore to recover their lost banner from the warlord who took it.
Flaws
Borin trusts battle plans less than the person shouting them, and he is quick to test authority with a glare or a challenge. He can turn a useful argument into a contest of stubbornness, especially if someone insults his fallen comrades or questions his courage. When his rage rises, he sometimes mistakes recklessness for wisdom and keeps swinging long after a safer choice would serve him better.
Quirks
Background
Borin Stonefist was born beneath a ridge of old iron mines where every child learned the weight of stone, steel, and oath. His clan expected him to take the pick, but Borin preferred the training yard to the tunnels. He was a stubborn, clever youth who could read a battlefield faster than he could read a ledger, and when raiders came through the passes, he fought beside the clan guard with a borrowed axe and the fury of a cornered bear. That day made him a soldier, and in time it also made him a barbarian, because the rage that saved his people never really left him. He served for years in a mountain host, breaking ambushes, holding gates, and learning that discipline and fury were not enemies, but partners. He became known for charging when the line wavered, bellowing orders through blood and smoke, then laughing in the aftermath like the whole war had been an excellent joke. After a disastrous campaign that cost too many good comrades, Borin walked away with his rank intact but his faith in commanders shattered. Now he wanders as a hard-bitten mercenary and battlefield adviser, offering his axe to those he thinks deserve it, and quietly hunting the warlord who sold his company into slaughter.
