Appearance
Augustus is a powerfully built human man with a broad back, thick arms, and a weathered complexion. He stands with his weight settled evenly over both feet, as though perpetually ready to brace against a charge. His dark brown hair is cut short with severe military neatness, while his beard is trimmed to a blunt, practical line. He keeps his equipment meticulously arranged, but his clothing is plain, repaired, and chosen for utility. His most noticeable habit is the way he silently evaluates doors, windows, exits, and elevated positions whenever he enters a room.
Mannerisms
When waiting, Augustus stands perfectly still with his hands loosely folded over the haft of a weapon. He counts exits under his breath, taps twice against his thigh before entering danger, and answers complicated questions with a long pause followed by the most literal interpretation possible.
Personality
Augustus is blunt, patient, and intensely practical. He speaks in short statements, dislikes speculation, and becomes calmer as a situation becomes more dangerous. He has little talent for abstract thought, but he remembers faces, routines, promises, and the precise sounds that precede an ambush. He is protective without being gentle, offering help as an order and affection as a criticism of someone's poor preparations.
Ideals
Survival. The living deserve a chance to make their own choices. Orders, causes, and reputations matter less than bringing people home alive.
Bonds
He still carries the battered unit pennant of the soldiers who served under him, and he will risk himself to protect any former comrade or camp follower who calls for aid.
Flaws
He is dangerously certain that most problems can be solved by applying more force. Augustus also confuses ignorance with honesty, dismissing advice he cannot immediately understand and becoming defensive when someone points out his mistakes.
Quirks
Background
Augustus Aldermar was born among ordinary townsfolk and learned early that being human meant adapting faster than anyone expected. He was not clever, perceptive, or eloquent, but he possessed an extraordinary physical strength and an instinctive understanding of how to hold a line. The army made use of those gifts. He became a shield bearer, caravan guard, and eventually a shock trooper whose battlefield ferocity earned him both respect and unease. His commanders valued his obedience, while his companions valued the simple certainty that Augustus would still be standing when the fighting ended. His final campaign ended in a pointless retreat ordered by officers who had misread the terrain. Augustus survived by ignoring shouted commands and following the movement of the soldiers around him. Afterward, he left the army with his pay, his weapons, and a deep distrust of grand plans devised by people who had never stood in the mud. He now works as a wandering guard and sellsword, taking practical contracts and avoiding causes that demand worship, cruelty, or unquestioning loyalty. Beneath his blunt manner is a fierce commitment to keeping ordinary people alive, especially those who have been told that their deaths are strategically acceptable.
