Appearance
Vaneil is a lean, long-limbed tiefling with deep umber-red skin, swept-back black horns, and dark violet eyes that catch the light like polished glass. His white hair is worn in a loose braid threaded with scraps of blue prayer ribbon. He dresses in black leather armor beneath a weathered acolyte's mantle, its hem marked with careful geometric script. He smells faintly of beeswax, old paper, and woodsmoke, a scent he is entirely unaware of. Within minutes of meeting someone, he will be noticed repeatedly touching the small brass clasp at his throat, checking that it is fastened.
Mannerisms
Vaneil speaks with quiet precision, often pausing to choose the most exact available word. He checks the brass clasp at his throat when nervous, traces invisible letters with one finger while thinking, and unconsciously arranges books, cups, and weapons into parallel lines.
Personality
Vaneil is patient, observant, and sincerely compassionate, but his kindness is expressed through practical acts rather than warmth. He remembers the names of servants, scribes, and guards, yet can become intensely distracted by a theological inconsistency. He distrusts easy certainty and tends to treat every supernatural event as both a crisis and a research opportunity.
Ideals
Truth. A sincere question is holier than a comfortable answer, and no tradition deserves protection from honest examination.
Bonds
I will recover the temple's stolen archive and return every sacred text, even if doing so exposes the pact that gave me my power.
Flaws
I cannot leave a contradiction unresolved, even when correcting it would be cruel, dangerous, or catastrophically ill-timed.

Background
Vaneil was raised in a temple archive where the priests believed that every prayer left a trace in the world. As a child, he copied funerary hymns, catalogued miracle accounts, and learned to read three dead liturgical scripts before he understood why some worshippers stared at his horns. The temple gave him shelter, but never quite belonging. He responded by becoming indispensable, memorizing obscure rites and correcting senior priests when their records contradicted one another. His life changed when he discovered a sealed collection of forbidden devotional texts beneath the archive floor. One book contained a responsive prayer written in ink that moved like spilled shadow. When Vaneil read it aloud, something answered from beyond the page. The voice offered knowledge in exchange for a promise to carry its questions into the wider world. Vaneil accepted, believing he could turn the pact into a kind of theological experiment. Now he travels as an acolyte and warlock, gathering lost scriptures, investigating supernatural omens, and quietly wondering whether the presence behind his magic is a forgotten saint, an imprisoned fiend, or simply a very convincing liar.
“The temple gave him shelter, but never quite belonging.”
