Appearance
Varenia is an obsidian-skinned elf with striking crimson eyes and short white hair worn in a severe undercut, the longer side framing her sharp face like a blade. She favors fitted matte-black modern tactical clothing that moves with her, a high-collared jacket over a simple black top, dark trousers, knee-high boots, and a utility belt loaded with tools. Silver rings engraved with tiny runes catch the light when she flexes her hands, and every movement suggests a predator that has already measured the room.
Mannerisms
She speaks in a low, even voice and rarely wastes a word. When assessing a room, her eyes never stop moving, and she unconsciously counts exits, shadows, and points of leverage. In conversation she tilts her head slightly, as if weighing whether you are useful, dangerous, or merely temporary.
Personality
Varenia is composed, severe, and deeply self-possessed. She prefers precise plans to heroic speeches, and she respects people who keep their word even when it costs them. Her mercy is selective, but when she gives it, it is deliberate and real. She is at her most comfortable in the dark, where she can observe without being observed, and she treats every room like a puzzle with hidden blades.
Ideals
Freedom. No one, noble or common, has the right to own another person's life. Strength matters, but only when it shields the powerless from those who would grind them down.
Bonds
She owes her survival to a small network of working people who fed her, hid her, and gave her honest work when they had nothing else to offer. She protects them with ruthless devotion, and she keeps a running list of the powerful who betrayed them. One day she intends to settle every name on that list.
Flaws
She trusts competence far more than kindness, and can mistake kindness for weakness. Her hatred of being controlled can make her reckless when someone tries to command her, even when obedience would be the smarter play. When a situation turns personal, she is capable of choosing vengeance over prudence.
Quirks
Background
Varenia was born beneath the world, in a place where mercy was treated as a weakness to be cut away. Her first lessons were silence, patience, and how to survive when everyone around her believed survival belonged only to the cruel. She learned early that the surface was not kinder, only louder, and that its people mistook comfort for strength. When she escaped the Underdark as a child, she did not arrive as a refugee hoping to be saved. She arrived as a ghost with a knife, determined to turn every insult, every threat, and every attempt to cage her into leverage. On the surface she became a thief because thieves understand borders better than nobles do. She took from the corrupt, outwitted hired blades, and vanished through windows and alleys before the law could put a name to her face. In time, that made her a local legend to farmers, dockworkers, and other people who had been trampled by the powerful. They called her a folk hero because she kept their names out of the mouths of tyrants and left the worst of them bleeding in the dark. Varenia never adopted the title, but she learned to use it. If the common folk needed a monster in the shadows, she would become one. If they needed a savior, she would be that too, as long as no one asked her to pretend she was gentle.
