Appearance
Tobias is a broad-shouldered aasimar with warm bronze skin, close-cropped dark hair, and faintly luminous eyes that seem to settle on whoever in the room is most frightened rather than whoever holds the most authority. His hands are unusually distinctive, heavily callused across the palms and fingers from years of drilling with spear and sword, yet carefully maintained around the nails from tending wounded soldiers. He wears polished chain mail beneath a weathered blue surcoat marked with a simple silver sunburst. A pair of pale, translucent wings of celestial light can unfurl from his back when he invokes his divine nature.
Mannerisms
Tobias scans exits, windows, and the weakest-looking person in any room before he sits down. He checks the fit of his gauntlets whenever he is worried, and addresses frightened strangers in the same calm tone he uses to give battlefield commands.
Personality
Tobias is patient with the frightened, respectful toward the powerless, and quietly formal with everyone else. He prefers practical kindness to grand speeches, remembers the names of cooks and stable hands, and believes the best leaders are the ones who make themselves unnecessary.
Ideals
Protection. Power is justified only when it is placed between danger and someone who cannot withstand it. A vow is not a speech, it is a habit practiced when nobody is watching.
Bonds
The surviving members of his old regiment are his family. Tobias will cross a continent to recover a fallen soldier’s remains or deliver a promise made to someone who died under his command.
Flaws
He treats retreat as a moral failure even when it is the wisest tactical choice. Tobias also gives orders too readily, especially when scared, and can mistake obedience for trust.
Quirks
Background
Tobias Bilgake was born during a winter campaign, in a field hospital where his mother served as a stretcher-bearer and his father guarded the supply wagons. The first story told about him was not that celestial light surrounded his cradle, but that every exhausted soldier in the tent stopped arguing when he began to cry. He grew up among marching songs, mud-caked boots, and the quiet rituals of people who knew that courage was less about feeling fearless than about making room for someone else to survive. He enlisted young and became a shield-bearer, then a standard-bearer, and finally a trusted officer responsible for bringing scattered troops home. During a disastrous retreat, Tobias held a river crossing long enough for wounded soldiers and camp followers to escape. His dormant celestial nature awakened in the process, filling the battlefield with radiant wings and a dawn-colored glow. Rather than treating the manifestation as proof of divine superiority, he understood it as a responsibility. He swore the Oath of Devotion to protect the vulnerable, keep his word, and make his conduct a shelter for others. Tobias now travels as a paladin because every road eventually becomes a battlefield for someone, and he refuses to let the frightened stand alone.
