Appearance
Maximus is a broad-shouldered human with weathered bronze skin, a square jaw, and close-cropped black hair streaked with early gray. A crooked scar runs from his left temple to his cheek, and his gray-green eyes rarely remain still. He wears battered chain mail beneath a red and charcoal surcoat, carries a heavy shield marked with a cracked sunburst, and keeps his longsword polished despite the rest of his equipment being scarred and travel-worn.
Mannerisms
Maximus checks every doorway and window before sitting down. He sharpens his sword while listening to arguments, taps two fingers against his shield when angry, and addresses strangers by military rank until they prove they deserve a more personal name.
Personality
Maximus is blunt, intensely observant, and more compassionate than he wants anyone to know. He respects competence, keeps promises made under pressure, and prefers direct action to debate. He jokes at inappropriate moments, especially before a dangerous fight, because he believes fear should never be allowed the final word.
Ideals
Freedom. No ruler, temple, or army owns the right to decide who must suffer. I will choose my own path and break anyone who uses authority to prey on the helpless.
Bonds
He carries a cracked shield from the bridge where his old unit made its final stand. He has sworn to find the commander who abandoned the civilian column and make him answer for every death.
Flaws
He is quick to treat compromise as cowardice and often escalates a conflict simply because backing down feels like surrender. Maximus distrusts idealists, dislikes being questioned by people without battlefield experience, and secretly fears that his oath is only a more honorable name for vengeance.

Background
Maximus Godsreach was born in a frontier garrison where every adult knew how to mend armor, bury the dead, and tell the difference between a warning horn and a death horn. As a young man, he joined the army for food and status rather than patriotism. He proved fearless in battle, though his commanders often criticized his habit of ignoring orders when he believed a faster or more brutal solution would save lives. During a disastrous retreat, Maximus held a ruined bridge against overwhelming numbers long enough for hundreds of civilians to escape. The army called it a victory, but Maximus remembers the names of those who did not make it across. After the war, he found faith in the aftermath rather than in any temple. He swore an oath of vengeance against warlords, slavers, and officers who spend lives as if soldiers were coins. Maximus does not pretend to be righteous. He follows his own judgment, protects people he considers worth protecting, and has little patience for laws that shield the powerful. His old military rank still opens doors, but it also attracts enemies who remember the choices he made during the retreat. He now travels as a wandering paladin, hunting those who profit from suffering while searching for a cause he can believe in without surrendering his freedom.
