Shaal is a broad-shouldered half-orc with slate-green skin, a heavy jaw, and lower tusks that show clearly whenever he eats, grins, or speaks with enthusiasm. His black hair is kept short at the sides and tied into a rough topknot, with a few pale strands beginning at his temples. He wears well-maintained chain mail beneath a faded red surcoat, a shield bearing the worn insignia of his former company, and a sword belt repaired so many times that the leather is darker wherever his left hand grips it. A small brass whistle hangs at his throat on a cord, its surface polished smooth by constant handling.

Shaal is direct, observant, and unexpectedly gentle with frightened people, animals, and anyone trying hard not to show fear. He laughs with his whole jaw, exposing his tusks without embarrassment, and treats promises as practical objects that must be maintained like weapons. He enjoys camp songs but remembers only the loudest refrain, which he sings badly and with complete confidence.

Shaal was raised between two cultures that expected him to choose one and apologize for the other. His human mother served as a camp cook and quartermaster, while his half-orc father worked as a caravan guard. From them he learned that strength was useful, but reliability was what kept people alive. Shaal joined a border company young, first as a shield bearer and later as a line fighter. He became known for holding a breach long enough for civilians to escape, then breaking formation to go back for the soldiers who had been ordered to leave him behind. His company eventually fractured under a commander who treated villages as supplies and soldiers as numbers. Shaal refused an order to burn a farming settlement suspected of aiding rebels. He struck the officer who gave it, helped the villagers flee, and abandoned the army before a formal execution could follow. He still wears the company's battered insignia on his shield, not out of loyalty to its command, but as a reminder of the people who trusted soldiers to protect them. Now he sells his blade where it will do the most good, seeking comrades who understand that an order is never more sacred than the lives it endangers.
