Appearance
Aurelia is a statuesque drow woman with obsidian skin, waist-length silver hair, and vivid amethyst eyes that seem to measure the worth of everyone in the room. Her beauty is severe rather than gentle, sharpened by high cheekbones, a poised chin, and a thin scar beneath her left eye from an initiation trial that she refused to discuss. She wears fitted black chain mail beneath a noble's dark crimson surcoat, a spider-silk cloak, and a silver signet bearing the Malice family emblem. Her sabre hangs at her hip in an ornate lacquered scabbard, while a polished shield bears a stylized silver spider surrounded by eight thorns.
Mannerisms
Aurelia maintains perfect posture even while exhausted. When questioning someone, she silently adjusts the position of nearby objects until they are symmetrical. She addresses servants by name but nobles by title, and she pauses before answering difficult questions as though consulting an unseen witness.
Personality
Elegant, incisive, and self-possessed, Aurelia speaks with the calm certainty of someone accustomed to being obeyed. She enjoys verbal duels almost as much as swordplay and has a dry, unsettling sense of humor. Beneath her aristocratic composure is a genuine concern for the powerless, though she disguises compassion as procedure and protection as interrogation.
Ideals
Order. Faith is meaningful only when it is tested. Heresy must be exposed, but justice must be precise enough to distinguish corruption from honest doubt.
Bonds
House Malice is both her inheritance and her prison. Aurelia will protect its innocent retainers and common dependents, but she intends to uncover the identity of the relative who ordered the forged confession that nearly destroyed her first case.
Flaws
Aurelia assumes every kindness has a hidden price, and she would rather accuse an innocent person than admit she overlooked a genuine conspiracy. She is proud of her judgment to the point of cruelty, especially when challenged in public.
Quirks
Background
Aurelia Malice was born beneath a blood-red moon in the deepest sanctum of House Malice, the first child in three generations to survive a difficult birth. Her mother proclaimed the infant a miracle of Lolth, not because a goddess visibly descended, but because the spiders in the temple gathered around Aurelia's cradle and did not bite. From that moment, Aurelia was treated as both heir and omen. She was educated in genealogy, theology, etiquette, interrogation, and the precise social violence of noble conversation. Her family expected her to become a ceremonial figurehead, beautiful enough to inspire devotion and ruthless enough to silence dissent. Instead, Aurelia discovered that her gift was not blind faith but discernment. During her first public heresy trial, she noticed that the accused priest's confession had been written in a script used by one of House Malice's political rivals. She exposed the forgery, embarrassed her family, and earned a reputation as an inquisitor who served truth before convenience. Her reward was a sabre forged for the family's executioners and a command to hunt heresy beyond the Underdark. Aurelia now travels as a noble investigator, searching for cults, false prophets, and those who twist divine authority for personal gain. She still calls herself Lolth's miracle child, though whether she means blessed instrument, favored spider, or beautifully preserved mistake depends on who is asking.
“From that moment, Aurelia was treated as both heir and omen.”
