Appearance
Balgrin is a broad-shouldered male dwarf with weathered copper skin, a thick auburn beard braided with iron rings, and a flattened nose earned in too many battles. His left eyebrow is split by an old scar, and his gray-green eyes remain alert even when he is laughing. He favors practical traveling clothes beneath battered leather straps, a heavy greataxe at his back, and a round shield painted with the faded emblem of his former regiment.
Mannerisms
Balgrin rolls his shoulders and flexes his fingers before danger, unconsciously repeating military drills. He addresses close companions as 'shield-brother' or 'shield-sister,' taps two fingers against his axe haft when thinking, and laughs with a sudden explosive bark that makes nearby cups tremble.
Personality
Balgrin is boisterous, fiercely protective, and impossible to intimidate for long. He enjoys strong drink, honest contests, loud songs, and people who keep their promises. Beneath his rough humor is a patient observer who notices frightened faces, hidden exits, and who has been left out of the conversation.
Ideals
Freedom. No law is worth obeying when it demands that good people be abandoned. Strength exists to shield those who cannot stand alone.
Bonds
The survivors of Balgrin's old regiment are his family. He will cross any battlefield to rescue one of them, and he carries their broken unit insignia as a promise that their sacrifice will not be forgotten.
Flaws
Balgrin distrusts polished officers, wealthy patrons, and anyone who gives orders from a safe distance. He is quick to escalate an insult into a confrontation, especially if he thinks someone is bullying the weak. He also has a habit of treating every problem like a battlefield, even when patience or diplomacy would serve better.
Quirks
Background
Balgrin grew up in a deep-hall clan where every dwarf learned the weight of stone, the discipline of the forge, and the names of those who had died defending both. He entered military training as soon as he reached adulthood, serving in a frontier regiment that guarded mining roads and isolated settlements. He was never the most obedient soldier, but he was the one who charged into danger when others hesitated. His commanders called it reckless. The villagers he saved called it courage. During a disastrous retreat through an underground pass, Balgrin held a collapsing gate long enough for his surviving comrades and a caravan of civilians to escape. The regiment was scattered, and the officers later blamed him for disobeying orders that would have abandoned the civilians. Balgrin left the army rather than accept a medal from leaders who valued formation over lives. Now he wanders as a sellsword and protector, seeking the surviving members of his old unit and hunting the creatures that drove them from the pass. His rage is not mindless fury. It is the remembered roar of every frightened civilian he refused to leave behind.
