Appearance
Tavri is a lean, weathered human man of average height, with very short dirty blonde hair and a crooked nose that healed badly after a military brawl. His face is narrow, pocked by old acne and sun damage, with pale eyes that rarely remain still. He is not handsome, imposing, or especially muscular, but years of marching have given him a hard, economical posture. He wears thick brown leather over layered gray linen, reinforced trousers, worn boots, and a weather-stained military cloak. His halberd is carefully maintained despite the rest of his clothing looking neglected.
Mannerisms
Tavri stands with his back to walls, checks every doorway twice, and cleans his halberd whenever conversation becomes too personal. He points with his chin instead of his hand and laughs sharply at moments when other people expect fear or sympathy.
Personality
Tavri is abrasive, suspicious, and quick to interpret ordinary mistakes as deliberate disrespect. He speaks in clipped military phrases, treats kindness as a hidden bargain, and prefers people who are too frightened to challenge him. Despite his contemptuous manner, he notices danger quickly and instinctively places himself between civilians and violence, then loudly claims he did it for practical reasons.
Ideals
Order. People are safest when everyone knows their place and obeys the rules, even if Tavri privately breaks those rules whenever survival demands it.
Bonds
He secretly sends money and coded messages to his younger sister, the only member of his family he believes might still forgive him. He also keeps the broken spearhead taken from the mountain pass where he deserted, hoping that possessing it will somehow make the memory bearable.
Flaws
He is convinced that cruelty is the same thing as strength. When frightened, he becomes insulting, loud, and eager to provoke a fight. He cannot admit ignorance, apologize sincerely, or tolerate being pitied. His hatred of foreigners and anyone outside his rigid idea of social order is partly genuine prejudice and partly a desperate attempt to make his own betrayal seem less shameful.
Quirks
Background
Tavri Kallio was born in Orvaita, a hard northern nation where every man served the state and every household knew exactly what a son was expected to become. His father was a quartermaster, his mother managed the home, and Tavri grew up hearing that obedience was the only virtue that mattered. He entered the army at seventeen, learned to use a halberd in crowded shield lines, and discovered that he was better at threatening frightened recruits than inspiring them. His bitterness and contempt made him feared, but never respected. During a winter campaign, Tavri was ordered to hold a mountain pass with a badly equipped unit while officers withdrew to safety. When the attack came, he panicked, abandoned his post, and fled into the snow. The rest of the unit was slaughtered, and Orvaita declared him a deserter. His military rank was revoked, his family was threatened with punishment, and a death sentence was issued in his name. Tavri escaped across the border carrying only his halberd and a stolen cloak. Now he sells his skill as a guard and sells his anger as if it were courage. He despises softness, foreigners, women who defy custom, and anyone whose existence reminds him that he ran. Beneath every insult is the same terror that one day someone will look closely and see the coward he believes himself to be.
