Appearance

Silas is a rail-thin Tiefling with dusty, brick-red skin and a perpetual hunch. One of his horns is jaggedly broken halfway up, a souvenir from a failed getaway. He wears oversized, grease-stained leathers and carries a heavy, singed book chained to his waist. His eyes are large and darting, filled with the anxiety of someone who knows he is out of his depth.

Mannerisms

He constantly adjusts his collar and has a nervous habit of clicking his tongue against his teeth.

Personality

Silas is apologetic to a fault and painfully aware of his own limitations. He speaks in a hurried whisper and frequently attempts to blend into the shadows, even when no one is looking for him. Despite his criminal past, he is remarkably bad at lying, often tripping over his own explanations and sighing in defeat when caught.

Ideals

Survival. The world is a dangerous place, especially for someone as clumsy as me. I just want to make it to tomorrow.

Bonds

I still owe the gang that abandoned me in prison, though I cannot decide if I want to pay them back with coin or fire.

Flaws

I am a coward who jumps at the sound of my own footsteps, and I am far too willing to agree to bad deals if they get me out of immediate trouble.

Quirks

Compulsively polishes his broken horn when stressed.
Apologizes to inanimate objects he bumps into.
Whispers back to his book when it rustles.

Background

Silas was never meant to be a criminal. Born into poverty and lacking any physical grace or social charm, he attempted to follow a local gang of thieves simply to avoid starvation. Unfortunately, he was caught during his first four attempted burglaries. While rotting in a damp dungeon and facing a long sentence, he found a piece of scorched parchment wedged into the stones of his cell. Thinking it was a legal petition, he signed it with his own blood out of sheer, desperate stupidity. The parchment was actually a contract with a minor lord of the Nine Hells. Silas found himself suddenly imbued with terrifying, uncontrollable magic and escaped the prison in a cloud of accidental fire. Since then, he has been a reluctant pawn. He wanders the world trying to find a way to fulfill his side of the deal without getting himself killed, constantly terrified that his patron will realize how incompetent their new servant actually is.
