Appearance
A lean human man with olive skin, narrow hazel eyes, and dark brown hair worn shoulder length, usually tied back with a strip of faded blue cloth. His hands are unusually distinctive, the fingertips stained with ink, the nails carefully trimmed, and the knuckles hardened from years of palming coins, handling cards, and working cheap locks. He dresses like a respectable traveling clerk at first glance, but the coat lining hides pockets, false seams, and tiny brass tokens. His voice is soft and breathy, with a faint sibilant lilt. When frightened or angry, his words become clipped and his breathing turns audibly shallow, as though he is trying not to wake something listening nearby.
Mannerisms
He rubs ink from his fingertips whenever he is thinking, taps twice on any locked container before opening it, and gives people a fraction too much eye contact when telling the truth. When rattled, he pauses between words to control his breathing and unconsciously whispers the last syllable of his own sentence.
Personality
Sethes is charming, observant, and almost offensively adaptable. He treats conversation as a card game, constantly tracking what each person wants, fears, and is pretending not to notice. He is generous with small comforts, suspicious of grand gestures, and sincerely fond of people who can catch him in a lie without humiliating him. Beneath his practiced confidence is a man who desperately wants one relationship that does not depend on a performance.
Ideals
Freedom. No king, priest, patron, or fey should own another person's choices. If a promise becomes a chain, find the weakest link and pull.
Bonds
The green mirror that began his pact is hidden in a locked case, and he will risk nearly anything to learn who made it and what the Lady Beneath the Briars ultimately wants from him.
Flaws
He cannot resist improving a lie, even when the original lie was already working. He also assumes every gift has a hidden price, except the gifts he gives himself, which he insists are purely practical.

Background
Sethes Varga grew up in a river town where honest work paid slowly and lies paid immediately. His mother taught him letters by having him copy shipping manifests, while his uncle taught him the more useful arts of marked cards, forged seals, and knowing which details people wanted to believe. Sethes became a traveling confidence man, selling miracle tinctures, counterfeit introductions, and glimpses of a future he had no more authority to see than anyone else. His luck changed during a winter con involving a locked family reliquary. Inside was not silver, but a thin green mirror that reflected a moonlit forest no matter where it was held. When Sethes spoke a childhood prayer into its surface, something on the other side answered. The Archfey called itself the Lady Beneath the Briars and offered him power in exchange for one promise, that he would never again sell a lie without leaving a door open for the truth. Sethes agreed, then immediately tried to cheat the wording. The pact remains profitable, dangerous, and increasingly personal. His current schemes are designed to uncover who first placed the mirror in the reliquary, and why the Fey Court seems to know his real name better than he does.
