Appearance
Edrin Vale is a broad-shouldered human man with weathered olive skin, close-cropped dark brown hair, and a narrow scar running from his left temple to the edge of his jaw. His gray eyes are alert and perpetually thoughtful, often shifting toward written inscriptions, old stonework, or unusual symbols. He wears well-maintained chain mail beneath a plain traveling tabard, carries a longsword and shield, and keeps a bundle of annotated parchment tucked beside his holy symbol. His armor is practical rather than ornate, with small ink stains on the leather straps and a faded blue ribbon tied around one wrist.
Mannerisms
Edrin taps the pommel of his sword whenever he is thinking, traces invisible letters on his shield while listening, and tends to quote the titles of books instead of simply saying that he knows something. Before entering a ruin, he whispers the names of three people who died protecting knowledge.
Personality
Edrin is patient, observant, and earnest, with the habit of treating every conversation like an exchange of evidence. He is more comfortable discussing an obscure dynasty than making small talk, yet his kindness is practical and sincere. He asks careful questions, remembers small details about strangers, and becomes unexpectedly fierce when someone vulnerable is threatened.
Ideals
Truth is a shield for the powerless. Knowledge should not belong only to kings, priests, or those wealthy enough to lock it away.
Bonds
A fire destroyed the monastery where Edrin received his education. Several irreplaceable volumes vanished that night, along with his mentor, Brother Caldus. Edrin believes the fire was deliberate and that one missing manuscript contains a warning about a coming catastrophe. His oath is not merely to protect the innocent, but to recover the lost truth before someone uses it to destroy them.
Flaws
Edrin cannot leave a mystery alone, even when solving it is reckless or tactically foolish. He is also quietly contemptuous of people who destroy books, dismiss scholarship, or rely on tradition without understanding its origin. When frightened, he hides behind analysis and may continue explaining a danger long after everyone else has realized that action is required.
Quirks
Background
Edrin Vale was raised in a riverside village where the old chapel doubled as a schoolhouse and archive. His mother copied legal records for the magistrate, while his father repaired the chapel roof and taught him the names of saints, stars, and ancient kings. When a traveling historian discovered Edrin's talent for languages and memory, the boy was sent from manor to monastery, trading labor for access to private libraries. He cleaned scriptoriums, carried coal, repaired bindings, and spent every spare hour studying the history of wars, vanished empires, and the strange recurring symbols found on forgotten tombs.
