Appearance
A short, broad-bellied male halfling with bronzed skin, brown eyes, and a perpetually red alcoholic nose framed by flushed cheeks. His silver-blond hair is gathered into a long ponytail braid that reaches nearly to his waist, threaded with faded blue cord and tiny brass bells. He wears loose, travel-stained robes belted above his stomach, soft cloth shoes, and a battered drinking gourd. Despite his size and weight, his posture becomes perfectly balanced when danger appears.
Mannerisms
Baatar speaks slowly, as though each sentence must first pass through a sieve. He punctuates serious lessons by taking a drink, then demonstrates a martial principle with a casual shove, ankle hook, or perfectly timed tap. When annoyed, he polishes his cup with his sleeve and smiles too warmly.
Personality
Warm, shamelessly sociable, and impossible to embarrass. Baatar treats every stranger as a potential student, drinking companion, or lost relative. Beneath his theatrical slurring is a patient observer who notices footwork, breathing, exits, and who at the table has not yet been offered food.
Ideals
Generosity. A full cup is meant to be shared, a strong hand is meant to lift the fallen, and mastery is worthless if it cannot make someone else’s life easier.
Bonds
He carries a cracked blue cup that belonged to his first teacher, and he will risk almost anything to protect roadside shrines, kitchens, and travelers who have nowhere else to go.
Flaws
He insists that he is never drunk, merely conducting a complicated breathing exercise involving fermented grain. He gives reckless advice with absolute confidence, becomes sentimental when offered soup, and will sometimes start a fight simply because someone has insulted a perfectly respectable dumpling.
Quirks
Background
Baatar Tovin was born beneath a market cart during a rainstorm, the youngest son of a halfling family that moved from town to town selling fermented millet cakes, pickled roots, and dubious advice. He learned early that a small body could cross a crowded street unseen, and that a smile, a song, or a well-timed apology could open more doors than a strong back. His life changed when an elderly monastery cook caught him stealing dumplings. Instead of striking him, the old master made him wash every bowl in the kitchen, then taught him that balance began with knowing exactly where one’s hunger ended and another person’s began.
