Appearance
A broad-shouldered male tortle with dark olive scales, a weathered shell painted with faded red and black bands, and a chipped edge along the lower rim from an old street fight. His amber eyes are alert and compassionate. He wears a dark hood, a close-fitting leather harness, soft-soled boots, and cloth wraps around his claws. A short rapier rests at his hip, while a compact shortbow and quiver are secured across his shell. His shell bears several small painted symbols representing friends he failed to protect and allies he refuses to forget.
Mannerisms
Rook speaks in a low, measured voice and pauses before entering any room, silently counting exits. When nervous, he taps two claws against the rim of his shell. He often crouches instead of sitting and instinctively positions himself between danger and the smallest person nearby.
Personality
Rook is quiet, observant, and fiercely protective. He prefers rooftops, rain-slick alleys, and plans that leave everyone with an escape route. He distrusts grand speeches but believes deeply in small acts of courage, such as sharing food, standing watch, or stepping between a bully and a frightened child.
Ideals
Protection. Strength exists to shelter those who have none. The streets taught Rook that survival means little unless someone else survives beside you.
Bonds
The old street family that raised Rook is scattered across Baldur's Gate. He carries a painted wooden token from their hideout and secretly searches for every lost member. He also swore to protect the city's abandoned children from the gang bosses, corrupt guards, and monsters that prey on them.
Flaws
Rook cannot ignore someone being bullied, even when doing so would be wiser. He is suspicious of authority, quick to assume betrayal, and has a habit of taking dangerous risks when one of his old street friends is involved. Beneath his calm exterior, he fears that everyone he loves will eventually disappear.
Quirks
Background
Rook Shellscar was hatched far from Baldur's Gate, but he grew up beneath its bridges, in abandoned cellars, and among the crowded alleys where children learned quickly that kindness could be more valuable than gold. A gang of street urchins found him half-starved near the Gray Harbor and gave him a place beside their cook fire. They taught him how to vanish into crowds, climb drainpipes, lift a purse without breaking stride, and read the city by its smells, bells, and shadows. In return, Rook became their shield, using his shell to block blows and his claws to make cruel men regret cornering the smallest member of the gang.
