Appearance
Zac is a wiry male goblin with moss-green skin, oversized amber eyes, and a crooked smile full of needle-like teeth. His long ears are pierced with mismatched copper charms, and a thin scar crosses his left eyebrow. He wears battered scale mail beneath a patched burgundy cloak, carries a polished wooden mace shaped like a lantern, and keeps his shield painted with a grinning golden face.
Mannerisms
Zac constantly polishes his holy symbol with his sleeve, tilts his head dramatically before answering simple questions, and punctuates sermons by tapping his mace against his shield. When nervous, he speaks in an overly formal priestly voice and refers to himself in the third person.
Personality
Zac is theatrical, quick-witted, and relentlessly optimistic. He treats every conversation as a stage performance, every locked door as an invitation, and every dangerous villain as someone who has not yet heard the correct argument. Beneath the bravado, he is deeply compassionate toward outcasts and becomes unexpectedly serious whenever children, refugees, or the powerless are threatened.
Ideals
Mercy through misdirection. A clever deception that protects the innocent is more sacred than an honest word that serves cruelty.
Bonds
He carries the old priest's cracked holy symbol and has sworn to rebuild the burned roadside temple, even if he must fund it through increasingly questionable acts of fraud.
Flaws
Zac cannot resist improving a perfectly good lie, even when the truth would be safer. He is terrified that people will discover his faith is built on borrowed teachings and improvised theology, so he sometimes performs confidence rather than admitting uncertainty.
Quirks
Background
Zac was raised among a wandering goblin band that survived by scavenging battlefields, raiding abandoned shrines, and selling forged charms to nervous travelers. During one such job, he entered a ruined roadside temple intending to steal its silver altar pieces. Instead, he found a dying priest shielding a group of frightened children from a spreading fire. Zac dragged the priest to safety, then stayed long enough to hear the old cleric pray for mercy, not vengeance, upon the goblins who had caused the blaze. The prayer unsettled him more deeply than any curse could have done. Taking the priest's holy symbol and a collection of half-remembered teachings, Zac reinvented himself as Brother Zaccarus, a traveling healer and holy negotiator. His sermons are partly sincere, partly improvised, and occasionally supported by forged letters from nonexistent temples. He uses the tricks of a charlatan to protect the helpless, expose cruel authorities, and make greedy people surrender what they have stolen. Zac follows a deity of trickery and mercy, believing that a clever lie can sometimes reveal a greater truth, especially when spoken against tyrants, extortionists, and monsters who think kindness is weakness.
