Appearance
Kettik Vaaran is a tall, broad-shouldered wood elf with weathered copper-brown skin, straight black hair cut to his jaw, and pale gray eyes flecked with green. His left ear bears three small iron rings, and a narrow scar crosses his chin. He wears practical leather armor beneath a moss-green cloak, with a wooden shield marked by concentric growth rings. His hands are stained with ink, crushed leaves, and charcoal.
Mannerisms
Kettik pauses before answering difficult questions, tapping two fingers against his shield as though counting syllables. When nervous, he silently corrects grammatical errors in other people's speech. He writes observations in the margins of nearly everything he owns.
Personality
Kettik is precise, observant, and quietly intense. He prefers people who ask difficult questions and distrusts anyone who claims certainty without evidence. Although he can seem aloof, he is deeply attentive to small signs of discomfort in others and will often help without announcing it. His dry humor emerges most clearly when confronting pompous scholars, careless hunters, or anyone who mistakes book learning for wisdom.
Ideals
Knowledge. Every living thing contains part of the world's memory. To understand that memory is to become responsible for preserving it.
Bonds
I carry the unfinished field journal of my dead mentor, and I will complete it before I allow myself to die.
Flaws
I treat uncertainty as a personal insult, and when evidence is incomplete, I sometimes invent confidence rather than admit I do not know.
Quirks
Background
Kettik Vaaran was raised among the birch forests at the northern edge of elven territory, where his family kept records of animal migrations, medicinal plants, old boundary stones, and the names of those who vanished in winter. He learned letters from a traveling archivist and natural lore from his mother, a keeper of sacred groves. Kettik proved unusually gifted with written knowledge, but he was never satisfied with copying what others had learned. He wanted to understand the pattern beneath every living thing, the hidden grammar shared by root, river, beast, and elf. His studies eventually brought him to a remote woodland college, where he became a sage of natural philosophy and forgotten druidic traditions. There, he discovered references to a vanished grove whose guardians had recorded a warning about an approaching imbalance in the wild. The records were incomplete, and the scholars dismissed them as folklore. Kettik left the college with his notes, a battered calligrapher's kit, and a growing suspicion that the warning was real. He now travels as both researcher and druid, gathering evidence in the field while learning to trust instinct as much as ink. He is determined to find the lost grove before its secret is destroyed by those who would exploit it.
