Appearance
June is a lean, long-limbed kenku with soot-black feathers that soften to charcoal gray around her throat and wing joints. Her hands are especially noticeable, with broad, callused talons stained by resin, bowstring wax, and years of gripping rough branches and trap cords. She has a narrow, expressive beak and a surprisingly broad lower jaw, which becomes obvious whenever she laughs in a sequence of borrowed chuckles or crunches roasted nuts between her sharp-edged beak. A weather-faded green cloak hangs over her scale mail, and bundles of feathers, twine, and tiny animal bones decorate her pack.
Mannerisms
June tilts her head sharply when listening, as if matching a sound to a remembered place. She punctuates important statements with perfectly reproduced noises, such as a snapping twig, a distant raven call, or the creak of a wagon wheel. When thinking, she rubs resin from one talon to another and taps her beak twice against the rim of her cup.
Personality
June is alert, curious, and cheerfully irreverent. She treats every new place as a puzzle made of smells, tracks, weather, and overheard voices. She is kind to frightened animals and stranded travelers, but she has little patience for people who use tradition as an excuse for cruelty. June speaks in her own quiet clicks and croaks between borrowed phrases, and she prefers showing affection by remembering a person's exact words and repeating them at the moment they most need encouragement.
Ideals
Freedom. No creature should be trapped by the place it was born, the name others gave it, or the story people expect it to repeat.
Bonds
She carries a black pinecone from the forest where her mentor died, and she will risk almost anything to protect isolated travelers, hunters, and small settlements from the dangers beyond the road.
Flaws
June assumes that anyone who speaks with polished confidence is hiding something. She is quick to imitate a person's voice mockingly, even when restraint would serve her better, and she sometimes abandons a sensible plan simply because the dangerous option sounds more interesting.
Quirks
Background
June was raised among a loose flock of kenku who lived along the edge of a vast pine forest, where every useful sound was treasured. She learned the forest through echoes, copying the call of owls, the crack of falling branches, the hiss of frightened deer, and the clipped commands of hunters. Her talent for imitation made her valuable as a scout, but it also made her restless. She disliked the flock's habit of treating old routes and old grudges as sacred, and she began ranging farther from home, following game trails into country no one in the flock had mapped. During one winter, a traveling ranger rescued June from a snare meant for a wolf. In exchange for help repairing traps and carrying messages, the ranger taught her to read tracks, judge weather, and loose an arrow before fear could stiffen her wings. June eventually set out on her own, carrying a small collection of sounds from the people and creatures she has met. She now travels as an outlander and protector of wild places, using her mimicry to mislead predators, expose liars, and give frightened travelers the courage to keep moving. She does not seek fame, but she quietly gathers stories, routes, and names, hoping to prove that a kenku can create a life rather than merely repeat one.
“Her talent for imitation made her valuable as a scout, but it also made her restless.”
