Appearance
Novia is a small, narrow-framed kobold with rust-red scales, a pale cream muzzle, and large amber eyes that rarely seem to blink. Their oversized scholar's robe has been repeatedly shortened, patched, and re-stitched with mismatched thread, while a single well-cared-for blue scarf is wrapped neatly around their neck. Their clawed hands are stained with ink and charcoal, with several claws worn blunt from years of scratching symbols into stone, bark, and bone. A crooked leather bandolier carries chalk, folded maps, tiny vials of colored sand, and scraps of annotated parchment. Novia moves with deliberate confidence, as if every room has already been measured and every person assigned a likely future.
Mannerisms
Novia pauses before answering ordinary questions, tilts their head as though listening to an unseen future, and quietly counts under their breath whenever entering a new place. When casting a spell, they tap their staff three times, once for what was, once for what is, and once for what should be.
Personality
Novia is soft-spoken, observant, and unnervingly certain. They treat conversations as negotiations with several possible outcomes and often answer the question they expect someone to ask next. They are courteous to people who appear useful, patient with people who seem dangerous, and openly dismissive of anyone they judge incapable of planning ahead.
Ideals
Knowledge is power, and foresight is the purest form of power. Those who cannot see what is coming deserve whatever happens to them.
Bonds
Novia carries a fragment of the watchtower's foundation stone, carved with the first omen they ever deciphered. They intend to discover who made the original prophecies and use that knowledge to place their warren beyond the reach of every rival tribe, lord, and adventuring party.
Flaws
Novia cannot resist proving that they predicted a disaster, even when silence would save lives. They are willing to sacrifice strangers, allies, and sometimes entire communities if the result advances their warren's security or confirms their own importance.
Quirks
Background
Novia was hatched beneath a collapsed watchtower, where their kobold warren survived by scavenging the ruins of a forgotten border road. While other young kobolds learned traps, tunnels, and ambush routes, Novia became fascinated by the faded diagrams carved into the tower's foundation. They believed the markings were predictions rather than engineering plans, and they were right. By studying the positions of stars, cracks, moss, and old bones, Novia learned to anticipate cave-ins, patrols, storms, and the occasional unfortunate traveler. Their talent made them valuable, but their habit of treating every warning as proof of personal superiority made them deeply unpopular.
