Appearance
Veska is a broad-shouldered fallen aasimar woman with copper-black skin that catches crimson highlights along her cheekbones, knuckles, and collarbone. Her eyes are vivid orange with narrow, catlike pupils. Purple and maroon hair hangs in a rough, uneven mass around her face and neck. From between her shoulder blades grow long, leathery wings, feral and dark, extending above her head and trailing to the ground behind her like a ragged train. A faint necrotic haze clings to her body, paling nearby flames and making dust gather in slow spirals around her boots. She wears battered scale mail beneath a weathered shield, and constantly checks the leather straps securing her wings and armor.
Mannerisms
Veska takes up more space than she realizes, angling her wings around doorways and spreading them slightly when someone comes too close. She checks her shield straps, wing harness, and spear grip whenever she is thinking. When irritated, she clicks her tongue once and lowers her chin like a hunting cat.
Personality
Veska is blunt, observant, and intensely practical. She notices exits, weak hinges, loaded dice, and who has not eaten before she notices a room's decoration. Her humor is dry and unexpectedly gentle with animals, children, and frightened recruits. She dislikes being admired and trusts people more when they are willing to tell her she is wrong.
Ideals
No one is expendable. Authority is only worth obeying when it stands in the same danger as the people it commands.
Bonds
The soldiers who survived the Broken Gate are her family. She will cross a kingdom to answer a distress call bearing their old unit's red-cord signal.
Flaws
Veska assumes every chain of command will eventually sacrifice the people beneath it. She is quick to disobey orders, slow to forgive hesitation, and secretly terrified that her necrotic power is not a weapon she uses, but a hunger that uses her.
Quirks
Background
Veska was born in a border garrison where her celestial blood was treated as a useful omen until her wings emerged. They were not white, not graceful, and not anything the chaplain could bless. The long leathery limbs tore from her shoulder blades during a fever, black at the joints and red beneath the skin. The garrison priest called it infernal descent. Veska called it surviving. She learned quickly that people did not care whether her blood was truly fiendish. They cared whether she could hold a shield wall. She served as a line soldier, then as a sergeant of irregular infantry, specializing in breaking enemy formations and dragging wounded allies out of impossible places. During one retreat, her unit was abandoned by officers who fled through a sealed gate. Veska forced the gate open with her shield and led the survivors through, but the necrotic power in her blood awakened fully that night. The dead rose in the mud around her, and the soldiers who survived began calling her the Grave Banner. She deserted before the army could decide whether to execute her or turn her into a weapon. Now she travels as a sellsword, hunting the officer who abandoned her unit and trying to prove that what lives in her is a burden she can command, not a master waiting to claim her.
