Appearance

A broad-shouldered human man of medium height, built for long marches rather than showy strength. His dark brown hair is kept short at the sides and tied back at the nape, and his weathered face is clean-shaven except for a narrow line of beard along his jaw. He stands with his weight slightly forward, as if every pause might become the first step of a charge. His hands are heavily callused, and he wears a faded red cord around his left wrist, a campaign token from the first squad he served beside. Before speaking, he draws a quiet breath through his nose and lets it out slowly, giving the impression that every word has been measured for usefulness.

Mannerisms

Tomae pauses before answering difficult questions and presses his tongue briefly against the inside of his cheek while thinking. When waiting, he faces the nearest exit and rests one hand loosely on the back of his neck. Before a fight, he checks the distance to the smallest or oldest person present, then positions himself between them and the threat.

Personality

Quietly attentive and practical, Tomae notices who is tired, who is frightened, and which door is least secure. He has little patience for boastfulness, but a surprising tenderness toward children, animals, and inexperienced recruits. His anger is not loud at first. It arrives as stillness, a lowered voice, and a decision that someone else will not be allowed to suffer alone.

Ideals

Protection. Strength is not proven by how much pain a person can inflict. It is proven by how much danger they are willing to endure for someone who cannot endure it themselves.

Bonds

The villagers of Kuroda Ford sheltered me when I deserted my command. I will defend them, and anyone abandoned by those who claim to protect them.

Flaws

I mistake hesitation for cowardice, including in myself. When someone powerful harms the helpless, I can become so focused on making them answer for it that I overlook the danger to everyone else.

Quirks

Counts doorways and windows whenever he enters a room.
Keeps broken arrowheads in a small cloth pouch and sorts them by shape.
Shares the best part of his meal with animals before eating.
Practices silent marching steps whenever he is anxious.

Background

Tomae Vashiro grew up in a river town where the road south was always crowded with recruits, supply carts, and families fleeing one border war or another. He enlisted as soon as he was old enough, not from love of battle, but because the army offered food, discipline, and a way to keep raiders away from the town that had raised him. He learned to fight with a long-handled axe, to sleep lightly, and to read the shape of a battlefield from footprints, broken brush, and the silence of birds. His temper first revealed itself during a retreat, when his unit was trapped between a burning bridge and a band of pursuing mercenaries. Tomae held the crossing long enough for wounded soldiers and civilians to escape, then woke the next morning with his axe buried in a wagon wheel and no memory of the final minutes of the fight. He left the army after his commander ordered an entire village abandoned for tactical convenience. Tomae obeyed the order, but returned alone after dark and led the villagers through the marshes to safety. Since then, he has traveled as a guard, caravan blade, and occasional problem solver. He still respects soldiers who protect people, but distrusts anyone who speaks of acceptable losses without naming the people being lost. He adventures now because danger keeps finding the powerless, and because he has decided that if someone must stand in the road, it should be a person who knows exactly why he is standing there.
