Appearance
Varkhessa is a female orc with deep green-gray skin, a broad but refined face, prominent lower tusks, and black hair worn in tight cords down her back. She is exceptionally beautiful by orcish standards and striking by any standard, with sharp cheekbones, amber eyes, and a long, lean, heavily muscled frame. Her body has an unusual congenital condition, diphallia, which she treats as a private fact rather than a source of shame. In combat she wears layered wolf and aurochs furs over leather wrappings, leaving her powerful arms and shoulders free. She fights with a battleaxe in each hand, moving with precise, economical violence.
Mannerisms
Varkhessa rolls one shoulder before making a decision, taps the flat of her axe against her boot when impatient, and speaks in a low, measured voice even when surrounded by chaos. When anger rises, she becomes quieter rather than louder.
Personality
Varkhessa is controlled, observant, and unexpectedly gentle with the frightened or inexperienced. She studies every room like a battlefield, notices who is being ignored, and remembers the names of servants and camp followers. In conversation she is dryly humorous and direct, with a habit of answering emotional questions as if they were tactical problems. She enjoys maps, well-made tools, and people who can admit when they are wrong.
Ideals
Protection is a discipline, not a feeling. Strength exists to hold the line for those who cannot.
Bonds
The soldiers and civilians she rescued in the Stone Ladder Pass are her chosen family. She sends a portion of every reward to maintain their settlement and will cross a continent to defend them.
Flaws
She has little patience for cowardice, especially when it is disguised as prudence. Once she decides that someone has betrayed a promise, she finds it almost impossible to forgive them. She also has a private fear that her usefulness is the only reason people truly accept her.
Quirks
Background
Varkhessa was born among an orc war-band that prized endurance above appearance and obedience above cleverness. Her body was different from birth, and the elders treated the difference as an omen to be interpreted rather than a life to be understood. Varkhessa refused to become anyone's prophecy. She learned early that survival could be won through discipline, observation, and preparation as surely as through strength. A retired quartermaster named Drazh taught her letters, maps, logistics, and the quiet mathematics of keeping people alive. From him she gained the unusual intelligence that now guides her battlefield instincts. She served for years as a shock infantry soldier, carrying paired axes while other warriors favored heavier weapons. Her fighting style began as a practical response to fighting in cramped trenches and shield-packed breaches. It became something more personal after her unit was ordered to abandon wounded civilians during a retreat. Varkhessa disobeyed, held the line with two axes, and brought the survivors through the pass. Branded unreliable by commanders who valued orders over lives, she left the army with her rank intact but her faith in institutions broken. Now she works as a wandering mercenary and protector, entering battle with a berserker's fury, but never surrendering her mind to it.
