Appearance
Mira Kesh is a compact, athletic human woman with sun-browned skin, close-cropped black hair, and a narrow scar crossing her left eyebrow. Her dark eyes are quick and watchful. She wears chain mail reinforced and partially concealed by polished ankheg carapace plates, giving her armor a pale amber, chitinous sheen. Her broad ashwood spear is fitted with a leaf-shaped steel head, and a round shield bears the scratched insignia of a military unit she no longer serves.
Mannerisms
Mira checks the ground before she sits, keeps her back near a wall, and taps the butt of her spear twice before entering a dangerous place. When angry, she becomes unusually polite and addresses everyone by rank, including people who have no rank at all.
Personality
Mira is direct, dryly funny, and intensely practical. She notices exits, weak floorboards, and who is being left out of a conversation. Her loyalty is immediate once earned, but she tests people through small acts of trust before revealing anything personal. She prefers honest disagreement to polished obedience.
Ideals
Freedom. A uniform is not a moral compass. People must choose to do what is right, especially when obedience would be easier.
Bonds
The people of her home settlement trusted her when the earth opened beneath them. She will return whenever they need her, and she keeps one chipped ankheg plate as a promise that she will never again stand aside while innocents are sacrificed.
Flaws
Mira has no patience for orders that are not explained, and she can turn a reasonable disagreement into a public confrontation. She sleeps lightly, expects betrayal from anyone in authority, and sometimes risks herself recklessly because surviving when others did not feels like an obligation rather than a gift.
Quirks
Background
Mira Kesh grew up on the edge of a dry farming settlement where ankhegs burrowed beneath the fields every spring. When she was sixteen, an infestation broke through the village granary. Mira joined the militia line with a borrowed spear and held the tunnel mouth long enough for the villagers to escape. She survived by crawling beneath a collapsing carapace, then spent the next decade in a border regiment that valued her steady hands, sharp footwork, and refusal to abandon anyone in reach of her shield. Her service ended when an officer ordered her unit to burn a hamlet suspected of aiding raiders. Mira disobeyed, turned her spear on the men carrying the torches, and led the villagers through a ravine. She was branded a deserter, though several soldiers quietly followed her example and vanished afterward. She now travels as a monster hunter and caravan guard, wearing ankheg plates taken from the creature that nearly destroyed her home. She seeks the officer who gave that order, not for revenge alone, but to make certain no one else is allowed to hide cruelty behind a uniform.
