Appearance
Nikola is a tall, broad-shouldered half-elf woman with warm bronze skin, dark auburn hair braided with copper wire, and mismatched eyes, one green and one gray. Fine soot marks her fingers and the edge of her jaw, while a collection of brass instruments, tiny lenses, and engraved tools hangs from her belt. She wears practical scale mail beneath a well-tailored burgundy coat, combining noble refinement with the unmistakable look of a traveling artificer.
Mannerisms
Nikola taps a rhythm against her palm whenever she is thinking, adjusts her glasses or goggles before delivering an important opinion, and addresses machines as though they are temperamental members of her household.
Personality
Nikola is precise, courteous, and intensely curious. She treats every broken device as a puzzle and every social gathering as an experiment in human behavior. Her aristocratic upbringing gives her polished manners, but her workshop habits regularly intrude, leaving her with oil-stained gloves, unfinished sentences, and a tendency to inspect the hinges on every door she enters.
Ideals
Responsibility. Those with knowledge and power have a duty to use both in service of the vulnerable, even when the truth is inconvenient or dangerous.
Bonds
She is determined to restore her family name by proving that her inventions can save lives, not just expose corruption. She also carries a damaged brass memory cylinder belonging to her missing elven mentor and refuses to believe the mentor is dead.
Flaws
Nikola cannot resist correcting poor craftsmanship, even when doing so would be tactically foolish or socially disastrous. She also hides mistakes behind elaborate explanations, because admitting that her work failed feels like betraying both halves of her heritage.
Quirks
Background
Nikola was born into a minor noble house whose wealth came from maintaining bridges, clock towers, and fortified gates. Her human father expected her to master etiquette and estate management, while her elven mother encouraged her fascination with mechanisms, alchemy, and the patient logic of crafted things. Nikola excelled at both, learning to identify a noble by their crest and a failing gear by its sound. Her family tolerated her workshop until one of her experimental automatons exposed a long-hidden accounting fraud among the household stewards. Rather than silence the scandal, Nikola accepted responsibility for the machine and publicly revealed the truth. Her family name survived, but her place within the household became uncertain. She left home with her tools, a letter of introduction, and a conviction that invention should protect people rather than merely decorate palaces. As an artificer, she now travels from town to town repairing what others overlook, investigating dangerous arcane devices, and searching for the lost design notes of an elven engineer who once built a machine capable of storing a living memory.
