Appearance
A tall, broad-shouldered half-elf with warm bronze skin, dark auburn hair worn in a single long braid, and clear green eyes flecked with gold. A thin scar crosses his left eyebrow, a reminder of the night he failed to protect someone under his care. He wears polished chain mail beneath a deep green surcoat, carries a weathered shield marked with a golden leaf, and keeps a silver locket hidden beneath his armor.
Mannerisms
Caelan lowers his voice when discussing anything important, as if every conversation might be overheard. He checks doors, windows, and escape routes whenever he enters a room, and he touches the leaf-shaped guard of his sword before making a promise.
Personality
Warm, attentive, and unfailingly discreet, Caelan remembers small details about everyone he meets. He offers practical help before emotional comfort, stands slightly between companions and possible danger, and treats every secret entrusted to him as sacred. Beneath his calm manners is a fierce protective instinct that can become almost frightening when someone he loves is threatened.
Ideals
Mercy is not weakness. The strong exist to make sure the frightened, wounded, and powerless are given another chance to stand.
Bonds
The young woman he rescued is now hidden under another name, and Caelan would risk his life to keep her safe. He also carries the signet ring of the household he failed to protect, seeking the traitor who caused their deaths.
Flaws
Caelan confuses protection with control. He is prone to making decisions for the people he loves, even when they have clearly asked him to trust them. He also has little patience for anyone who treats loyalty as a weakness.
Quirks
Background
Caelan Veyr was raised between two worlds. His human mother served as a discreet political adviser in a coastal city, while his elven father was a wandering mediator who believed that every conflict had a person worth saving on both sides. Caelan grew up listening to whispered negotiations behind silk curtains, learning that a soft voice could stop a duel more reliably than a drawn blade. He became a trusted courtier and confidential messenger, carrying secrets for people who had no one else they dared trust. His life changed when a noble household he served was betrayed from within. Caelan managed to smuggle the family’s youngest daughter to safety, but he arrived too late to save the rest. Convinced that good intentions without strength were merely another form of helplessness, he swore an oath to preserve life, shelter the vulnerable, and stand between cruelty and those he loves. His devotion to the ancient powers of nature is unusual for a court-bred paladin. He sees the wild as a patient guardian, one that protects its young without asking whether they are important, wealthy, or politically useful. Caelan is generous with forgiveness toward the frightened, but terrifyingly relentless toward anyone who deliberately preys upon them.
