Appearance
Xogin is a compact, broad-shouldered halfling with warm brown skin, a square jaw, and thick black hair tied into a short tail with red thread. He stands with his weight balanced on the balls of his feet, as if every conversation might turn into a sprint. His clothes are clean but carefully ordinary, consisting of a charcoal vest, soft traveling shirt, dark trousers, and a weathered green cloak with many discreet inner pockets. He keeps his fingernails neatly trimmed, his boots polished, and one brass button on his vest deliberately mismatched. His smile is quick, lopsided, and usually appears just before trouble does.
Mannerisms
When waiting, Xogin quietly shifts his weight from one foot to the other and studies exits without moving his head. He smooths the front of his vest before telling a lie, taps twice on any locked object before opening it, and addresses every door as if it were a stubborn but potentially reasonable person.
Personality
Xogin is cheerful, observant, and disarmingly practical. He treats danger as an inconvenience to be negotiated rather than a reason to panic. He is generous with food, suspicious of compliments, and deeply respectful toward anyone who works with their hands. He prefers clever solutions over violent ones, though he is perfectly willing to fight when someone threatens the helpless.
Ideals
Freedom. Laws should protect people, not serve as velvet ropes for the wealthy. If a rule keeps an honest person helpless, Xogin believes breaking it may be the most lawful thing he can do.
Bonds
He protects the families who were nearly driven from their homes by the gang he betrayed, and he intends to one day dismantle that gang completely.
Flaws
Xogin cannot resist proving that he can defeat a lock, con, guard, or puzzle that someone claims is impossible. He also confuses being wanted with being important, and sometimes takes unnecessary risks simply to ensure that a former enemy hears his name.
Quirks
Background
Xogin grew up among the crowded alleys, market awnings, and back doors of a river city where halflings were welcomed as long as they remained useful and invisible. His mother ran a laundry, his uncle repaired locks, and both taught him that a closed door was not an insult, merely a puzzle. Xogin began as a runner for smugglers, carrying coded notes in bundles of clean linen. He learned which guards accepted apologies, which merchants lied about their scales, and which rooftops could support a halfling's weight. He also learned that the people who called themselves respectable were often more dangerous than the criminals they condemned. His turning point came when a local gang ordered him to deliver a sealed purse to an impoverished family as a warning. Instead, Xogin opened the purse, discovered evidence of a planned eviction scam, and stole the gang's account book. He distributed enough of the money to keep the families housed and sent the account book to a magistrate who owed his criminal contact a favor. The gang has not forgotten him, and neither have the rescued tenants. Xogin now travels as a thief with a conscience, taking from cruel people whenever he can, helping ordinary folk whenever he must, and insisting that every lock deserves to be asked politely before it is defeated.
