Appearance
Balthazar is a tall, broad-shouldered male tabaxi with sleek russet fur patterned by dark stripes and bright amber eyes. He wears well-maintained chain mail beneath a carefully tailored dark green surcoat, though the coat is slightly too short in the sleeves from years of repairs. A polished silver mirror hangs from his belt beside his holy symbol, and he checks his reflection in it whenever he thinks no one is watching. His shield bears a deliberately elegant sunburst design, while his javelins and sword are practical, clean, and arranged with almost fussy precision.
Mannerisms
He smooths his whiskers before making an important statement and checks the silver mirror at his belt whenever negotiations become tense. He speaks with polished formality, then occasionally ruins the effect with a blunt, practical observation.
Personality
Balthazar is fastidious, observant, and theatrically self-possessed. He cares intensely about his appearance and dislikes being seen as poor, frightened, or uncertain. Beneath the carefully maintained dignity is a compassionate survivor who quietly helps people in trouble, then insists that his actions were merely efficient or legally necessary. He has a dry sense of humor and pretends to dislike celebrations, music, and laughter, while always positioning himself close enough to enjoy them.
Ideals
Order. The world is cruel enough without everyone adding their own chaos. Rules should protect the vulnerable and restrain the powerful, even if Balthazar sometimes has to bend the rules to make that happen.
Bonds
He carries a small silver mirror that belonged to his mother, and he will risk nearly anything to protect his remaining family and the poor neighborhood where he was raised.
Flaws
He is vain, suspicious, and deeply uncomfortable when someone sees through his carefully controlled image. He often chooses an elegant lie over an awkward truth, even when honesty would be simpler. He claims that happiness makes people weak, but secretly resents anyone who seems effortlessly joyful.
Quirks
Background
Balthazar grew up in a crowded tabaxi quarter where beauty was treated as a luxury reserved for people who could afford to be careless. His family survived by mending clothes, polishing trinkets, and selling stories to travelers. He learned early that a clean collar could earn more trust than an honest explanation, and that a confident smile could keep hunger from becoming a public embarrassment. His childhood was rough, marked by debt, hard winters, and adults who often disappeared when promises became inconvenient. Balthazar responded by making himself difficult to overlook. He became meticulous about his clothing, his speech, and every detail of the identities he invented. As a young adult, Balthazar joined a traveling confidence ring and became its most convincing performer. He forged documents, posed as a minor dignitary, and separated gullible merchants from their coin. Yet he could never quite ignore people who were genuinely desperate. He secretly redirected food, medicine, and travel money toward victims of his own schemes, insisting afterward that he was merely correcting an unfair transaction. One particularly dangerous deception brought him before a wandering paladin, who recognized both his talent and his buried instinct to help others. Rather than turn him over to the authorities, the paladin demanded that Balthazar use his gifts in service of order. Balthazar accepted, claiming that happiness was a childish distraction, though he still finds himself smiling whenever a frightened person gets a second chance.
