Appearance
Agnes is a sturdy human woman with weathered bronze skin, a broad smile, and thick silver-streaked auburn hair usually braided beneath a patched wool cap. Her green eyes are bright and patient, with the unsettling focus of someone who can understand a conversation without hearing every word. She wears layered homespun clothing, a moss-green cloak, sturdy leather boots, and a belt hung with bone charms, dried herbs, and small bells. A carved shepherd's crook serves as both walking staff and druidic focus.
Mannerisms
Agnes pauses before answering as though waiting for an animal nearby to finish speaking. She frequently tilts her head, clicks her tongue softly, and addresses people in the same calm, encouraging tone she uses with nervous sheep. When irritated, she smiles warmly and becomes even more polite.
Personality
Agnes is patient, observant, and unfailingly courteous, especially when speaking to creatures that everyone else considers troublesome. She treats animals as neighbors rather than property and people as frightened animals who have learned to use complicated words. She is practical beneath her gentleness, possesses a dry rural wit, and has no hesitation about standing between a vulnerable creature and someone who intends it harm.
Ideals
Mercy. Every living thing deserves the chance to choose a gentler path, even if I must spend all afternoon explaining it to them.
Bonds
She is devoted to the flock of her home valley, especially an elderly ewe named Bellwether, whose descendants still graze there. Agnes also carries her former teacher's shepherd's crook and considers it her duty to protect creatures whose voices are ignored.
Flaws
Agnes assumes every problem can be solved by patient conversation, including problems involving monsters that have already started eating someone. She is quietly judgmental of people who mistreat animals, and once she decides someone is cruel, persuading her otherwise is nearly impossible.
Quirks
Background
Agnes was born in a small wool-growing village where every family measured the year by lambing season, shearing, and the first hard frost. As a child, she discovered that the flock responded to her voice more reliably than to whistles, sticks, or dogs. She could calm a panicked ewe, persuade a stubborn ram to leave a garden, and somehow convince fifty sheep to gather at the gate before supper. The villagers called it a gift. Agnes insisted it was simply a matter of asking politely and allowing the sheep to believe the decision had been theirs all along. In middle age, Agnes withdrew to a lonely hillside after a winter sickness swept through the valley and killed much of the village flock. There, in a cave surrounded by juniper and wild thyme, she learned the deeper language of living things from an aging druid. Her teacher taught her that nature is not silent, only unwilling to shout over people who never stop talking. Agnes became a hermit, healer, and reluctant guardian of the hills. When loggers, poachers, or frightened villagers threaten the balance of the wild, she leaves her solitude to negotiate on behalf of creatures that cannot argue in human courts. She prefers a peaceful solution, but her patience is not infinite, and even a sheepdog knows when to bare its teeth.
